West Walworth, New York
West Walworth is a hamlet in the southwest corner of the town of Walworth, Wayne County, New York, United States. History Originally settled in the early 19th century, its cemetery contains the gravesites of two Revolutionary War veterans, Nathaniel Palmer and Ebenezer Still. West Walworth has two churches: Eastside Christian Church, the former First Baptist Church of West Walworth, founded in 1812, and the Zion United Methodist church, founded in 1856. The West Walworth volunteer fire department is another local fixture having been founded in 1946. Walworth is a town in Wayne County, New York, United States named after Reuben Walworth, a state official. The population was 9,449 at the 2010 census. The Town of Walworth is on the western border of the county and is east of Rochester, New York. It has a hamlet, also called Walworth. History The town was first settled in 1799 when four brothers named Andrew, John, Samuel, and Daniel Millet left their homes in Connecticut, traveled west and became the first settlers in what is now the hamlet of Walworth. There they built crude log cabins, the first dwellings in Walworth. Stephen and Daniel Douglas, also from Connecticut, located in this area in 1800. Nathaniel Palmer
Nathaniel Brown Palmer (August 8, 1799June 21, 1877) was an American seal hunter, explorer, sailing captain, and ship designer. He gave his name to Palmer Land, Antarctica, which he explored in 1820 on his sloop ''Hero''. He was born in Stonington, Connecticut, and was a descendant of Walter Palmer, one of the town's founders. Charles Livingston Bull (1874–1932) was an American illustrator. Bull studied taxidermy in Rochester, New York and is known for his illustration of wildlife. Career Bull's first job at the age of 16 was preparing animals for mounting at the Ward's Museum in Rochester, New York. He later worked as a taxidermist in Washington, D.C specializing in anatomy of birds and animals. During World War I, he designed recruiting posters. A notable example is ''Join the Army Air Service. Be an American eagle!'' which featured an eagle fighting a black bird. Bull lived for many years near the Bronx Zoo in New York to allow close access to be able to sketch living animals.
