West Wallsend FC is an association football club based in West Wallsend, New South Wales, Australia. The club is a member of Northern NSW Football in Australia. The club was formed in 1891 by Scottish miners and is the third oldest surviving football club in the Northern Federation, behind Wallsend Red Devils FC (1887) and Adamstown Rosebud FC (1889). History Founded by Scottish miners in 1891 as West Wallsend Athletic FC, they did not compete during the 1895 and 1896 season due to a miners' strike in the district. The club re-formed at the end of 1896 as the West Wallsend Bluebells FC. Highlights include the club being selected in 1902 to represent Newcastle against Sydney and winning 4–2. West Wallsend is a suburb and small town in the City of Lake Macquarie, Greater Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. It is near the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway and the western suburbs of Newcastle. History The Awabakal are the traditional people of this area. Coal and railways West Wallsend's origins are in coal mining, the main concern being West Wallsend Colliery, from whose boundaries the old town grew. The West Wallsend Coal Company was formed in 1885 with a capital of £90,000 sterling. It secured of freehold land at and around where the township now stands. William Maunder
William "Podge" Maunder (30 November 1902 – 25 June 1964) was an Australian soccer player. Maunder is recognised as the player who scored Australia's first international goal. Early life Maunder was born in Newcastle in 1902. His father, known as "Doey" Maunder was a prominent local soccer player. William Maunder's brother, Henry also took up the game and William and Henry appeared in an international match together against Canada in 1924. Troy Halpin
Troy Michael Halpin (born 17 August 1973) is an Australian footballer and Sports/Football Development coach at Barker College and St Pius X Chatswood. Career He is one of the great talents Australian football has produced in the last two decades and was one of the most skillful players plying their trade in the now-defunct National Soccer League. Halpin represented many NSL clubs and won the NSL championship with Sydney Olympic and Perth Glory. He also played with Newcastle United and at Perth Glory with his brother Scott Halpin. William Coolahan was an Australian soccer player. He captained Australia in three matches. Club career Born in the footballing hotbed of West Wallsend, New South Wales, Coolahan began his playing career with West Wallsend before crossing to Adamstown Rosebud in 1929. He returned to West Wallsend in 1931 though he only stayed one season before crossing to Speers Point. After another stint with West Wallsend in 1933 and 1934, he moved to Adamstown. At Adamstown he played until the end of the 1942 season. He played his final season of senior football in 1943 for Lake Macquarie. International career He played seven matches for the New South Wales state team, playing as captain once. Coolahan represented Australia eight times in B international matches. The Waratah Cup is a knockout cup competition in New South Wales, run by the governing body of football in NSW, Football NSW. Teams competing in the Waratah Cup come from the National Premier Leagues NSW, National Premier Leagues NSW 2, National Premier Leagues NSW 3, National Premier Leagues NSW 4 and numerous other semi professional & amateur association clubs within New South Wales. Weston Bears Football Club is an Australian semi-professional soccer club based in Weston, New South Wales.
