Mason County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,453. Its county seat and largest city is Point Pleasant. The county was founded in 1804 and named for George Mason, delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention. Before the Civil War, the county was in the State of Virginia. Jackson County, West Virginia
Jackson County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 27,791. Its county seat is Ripley, and its largest municipality is Ravenswood. History In 1674, frontiersman Gabriel Arthur visited a large Native American village, probably the first white person to reach the area. French traders visited by 1796 and British traders by 1703. In 1749, Celeron De Blainville and his party traveling on the Ohio River left lead plates claiming the area for France. Baltimore-born explorer Christopher Gist visited the following year. In 1770, George Washington with his friend Dr. James Craik and Col. West Virginia Route 2
West Virginia Route 2 is a state highway in the US state of West Virginia. It generally parallels the Ohio River along the western border of the state, from U.S. Route 60 in Huntington (just west of the East End Bridge) northeasterly to U.S. Route 30 in Chester (just south of the Jennings Randolph Memorial Bridge). WV 2 leaves the shores of the Ohio River in two places: between Point Pleasant and Mount Alto (where West Virginia Route 62 follows the river) and between Ravenswood and Waverly (where West Virginia Route 68 mostly follows the river). West Virginia Route 62 is a north–south state highway in western West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 25 in Dunbar. The northern terminus is at Interstate 77 and U.S. Route 33 in Ripley. History In the 1920s, WV 62 was designated West Virginia Route 19. Up until the late 1960s, WV 62 was designated as U.S. Route 35 from Dunbar to Point Pleasant, crossing the Silver Bridge into Gallipolis, Ohio. After the Silver Bridge collapsed in 1967 (necessitating the building of a new bridge, the Silver Memorial Bridge—finished in 1969), US 35 was moved to the south bank (replacing the former WV 17) of the Kanawha River and US 35's previous route was designated as WV 62. In December 2003, WV 62 was extended northward (but geographically southeastward) along then-US 33 from its former northern terminus at US 33 in Mason to Ripley. Ripley is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, West Virginia, Jackson County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,074 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. History Ripley was originally owned and settled by William, John, and Lewis Rodgers. They received a grant of in 1768 where "Sycamore Creek joins Big Mill Creek" (the current site of Ripley). The land was later sold to Jacob (and Ann) Starcher, most probably in 1803.
