West Virginia Route 62
West Virginia Route 62 is a north–south state highway in western West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 25 in Dunbar. The northern terminus is at Interstate 77 and U.S. Route 33 in Ripley. History In the 1920s, WV 62 was designated West Virginia Route 19. Up until the late 1960s, WV 62 was designated as U.S. Route 35 from Dunbar to Point Pleasant, crossing the Silver Bridge into Gallipolis, Ohio. History Dunbar was incorporated on April 19, 1921, by an Act of the West Virginia Legislature. Dunbar is on land that was originally occupied by Native Americans with 11 mounds identified in the residential areas. The land was granted to George Washington for his military service and was named for Mary Dunbar after she inherited the land from Washington, although other sources say it was named for Dunbar Baines, a prominent area banker. Dunbar was a farming community until industries began to evolve in the city with the opening of glass and bottling plants in 1912. The Gravely Plow was invented in Dunbar in 1916. Kanawha River
The Kanawha River ( ) is a tributary of the Ohio River, approximately 97 mi (156 km) long, in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The largest inland waterway in West Virginia, its valley has been a significant industrial region of the state since early in the 19th century. It is formed at the town of Gauley Bridge in northwestern Fayette County, approximately 35 mi (56 km) SE of Charleston, by the confluence of the New and Gauley rivers. Pomeroy–Mason Bridge
The Bridge of Honor, commonly known as the Pomeroy–Mason Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River between the American cities of Pomeroy, Ohio and Mason, West Virginia. With construction being carried out by the C.J. Mahan Construction Company and overseen by the Ohio Department of Transportation, it was completed on December 30, 2008. Ownership of the bridge was transferred to the West Virginia Division of Highways upon completion. The crossing carries Ohio State Route 833 and West Virginia Route Spur 62. Construction issues The bridge was originally scheduled to open in 2006. However, numerous unforeseen issues delayed the construction. Although work began in 2003, river flooding, poor soil stability, a rock slide, and potentially problematic formwork all caused setbacks in the building process. Ohio State Route 833
State Route 833 (SR 833) is a long east–west state highway in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. Its western terminus is at the West Virginia state line in Pomeroy, where it provides a connection to West Virginia Route 62 (WV 62) via the Pomeroy-Mason Bridge across the Ohio River. Its eastern terminus is at an interchange with U.S. Route 33, SR 7, and SR 124 approximately north of Pomeroy. Established in 2003, SR 833 follows the former alignment of US 33, which was given a new, more direct route into West Virginia through Ravenswood, West Virginia and on Interstate 77 (I-77) in West Virginia. The West Virginia portion of decertified U.S. Route 33 was replaced by extending WV 62 to Ripley, West Virginia. Route description SR 833 exists entirely within the southern part of Meigs County.
