West Monona Community School District
The West Monona Community School District is a rural public school district headquartered in Onawa, Iowa. It operates an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school. The district is mostly in Monona County with a small portion in Harrison County. The district serves Onawa, Blencoe, and Turin. Previously, the district had two elementary schools, Central Elementary School and Lark Elementary School, and a junior-senior high school. Onawa, Iowa
Onawa is a city in, and the county seat of, Monona County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,906 at the time of the 2020 Census. It is the largest town on the Iowa side of the Missouri River between Council Bluffs and Sioux City. History Onawa was named for a character mentioned in the poem ''The Song of Hiawatha'' by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Onawa was platted in 1857, and the railway arrived to the city in 1867. The city is known for having the widest main street in the continental United States. Onawa was the site of a prisoner-of-war (POW) camp for captured German soldiers between 1944 and 1946. Historical documents indicate there were never more than 50 POWs in camp. A larger camp existed near the central Iowa town of Algona, and housed as many as 5,400 German POWs. East Monona Community School District
East Monona Community School District was a school district with a single school in Moorhead, Iowa. It previously served the cities of Moorhead and Soldier. History Circa 1997 the East Monona district and the Boyer Valley Community School District began a grade-sharing program. On September 9, 2003, the residents of the East Monona and Boyer Valley districts voted on a plan to consolidate the districts. The East Monona residents voted it down on a 313 to 178 basis, even though Boyer Valley residents voted in favor on a 385 to 30 basis. On Tuesday, September 23, 2003, the East Monona residents voted to dissolve the district, with 303–241 vote count. ''The Daily Nonpareil'' is a daily newspaper serving Council Bluffs and a 10-county area of southwest Iowa. ''The Daily Nonpareil'' is southwest Iowa's largest newspaper. It was founded on May 2, 1857. Monona County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,751. The county seat is Onawa. History The area around present-day Onawa was a stopping point in 1804 for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their exploration of the newly obtained Louisiana Purchase. Many years later, that site was memorialized as the Lewis and Clark State Park. Monona County was formed in 1851. It was perhaps named for an Indian word meaning "beautiful valley."
