West Melbourne Football Club
West Melbourne Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Its senior side competed in the VFA from 1878 through 1908, its peak as a club coming after it won the 1906 premiership. After disbanding at the end of the 1908 season, its identity was essentially overtaken by the North Melbourne Football Club, whose uniform briefly reflected the acquisition in the years following. History The West Melbourne Football Club was formed on the evening of 10 April 1874, at the James Watt Hotel on Spencer Street, with Thomas McPherson appointed its inaugural president. By 1877, it was the premier junior level club in the VFA, and from 1878, West Melbourne began competing in the association as a senior club, remaining there until the end of the 1880 season. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It includes teams from clubs based in the eastern states of Australia: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and includes reserves teams for the east coast AFL clubs. The league evolved from the former Victorian Football Association (VFA), and it has been known by its current name since 1996. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Jimmy Smith (Australian Footballer)
James Smith (4 January 1877 – 18 August 1948) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached St Kilda in the VFL during the early 1900s. Personal life The son of George Smith and Ellen Smith (1849–1896), née O'Neil, James Smith was born in Melbourne on 4 January 1877. He was the youngest of their three sons and was known by the name “Jimmy” or “Jim”. In early 1894, Smith married Mary Hayes (1874–1945) and they had five children together – Mary Kathleen (1894–1979), Ruby Myrtle (1895–1967), Margaret Smith (1898–1904), Ellen (1899–1966) and James Michael (1905–1911). Bert Ryan
Albert Edward Ryan (3 June 1880 – 29 October 1952) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Ryan was an established player at West Melbourne in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) before he came to the VFL. He had finished joint first in the VFA's goal-kicking in 1903 with 44 goals and again in 1904 when he kicked 51 goals. On each occasion he was the joint winner with Richmond's Jack Hutchinson. Ryan was then a fixture in their 1906 premiership. His season at Essendon consisted of 17 matches and although they made the Grand Final that year, Ryan was not picked at all during the finals campaign. Ryan led Australian rules football for many years, until 1952 when he suffered a stroke in the bath and was found by his wife in the early hours of the morning.
