Thames Ironworks F
The River Thames ( ), known alternatively in parts as the River Isis, is a river that flows through southern England including London. At , it is the longest river entirely in England and the second-longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn. The river rises at Thames Head in Gloucestershire, and flows into the North Sea near Tilbury, Essex and Gravesend, Kent, via the Thames Estuary. From the west it flows through Oxford (where it is sometimes called the Isis), Reading, Henley-on-Thames and Windsor. The Thames also drains the whole of Greater London. In August 2022, the source of the river moved five miles to beyond Somerford Keynes due to the heatwave in July 2022. The lower reaches of the river are called the Tideway, derived from its long tidal reach up to Teddington Lock. Its tidal section includes most of its London stretch and has a rise and fall of . David Lloyd (footballer, Born 1872)
David Lloyd (born June 1872) was an English footballer who played for Brentford, Thames Ironworks, the club that went on to become West Ham United, Fulham and Willesden. Lloyd was a career soldier in Third Grenadier Guards and played for the Third Grenadier Guards football team winning the first of his four footballing medals in the 1896–97 season when the Guards won the London League championship. Described as "dominant in the air in any position", he scored frequently with his head. In his second season as a player, he joined Brentford and won the London Senior Cup, scoring twice in the 5–1 final victory over Ilford. He played for Thames Ironworks during the 1898–99 season, the club's only season in the Southern League Division Two. This season the management committee for the club agreed to accept professionalism within the club believing professional players would attract a larger crowd and greater revenue. Harry Stapley
Henry Stapley (29 April 1883 – 29 April 1937) was an English amateur footballer who played for West Ham United and Glossop. Internationally, he played for the England amateur team and competed for Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics, where he scored 6 goals. Club career Stapley played for Manor Park Albion, Bromley and Norwich CEYMS before joining Reading, where he played for the reserve and amateur teams. He then played for Woodford Town, where he was made captain, before signing for West Ham United, then of the Southern League, on 28 September 1905. He continued to play for Woodford Town after his signing. Stapley made his West Ham debut against Portsmouth on 23 December 1905 and scored the only goal of the game. He spent three seasons at Upton Park and was the Irons' top scorer in all three, even though his job as a schoolteacher prevented him from traveling to certain midweek away games. 1905–06 In English Football
The 1905–06 season was the 35th season of competitive football in England. Events Following the increase in size of the Football League from 36 clubs to 40, and with Doncaster Rovers having been relegated from the Second Division, four new clubs were elected into the league, along with Stockport County who had won the Lancashire Combination. These new clubs were: Chelsea, Hull City, Leeds City and Clapton Orient. Crystal Palace were formed this year but failed to gain election to the Football League by one vote and instead started their existence in the Southern League. Bristol City, the only non-London League side south of Birmingham at the time, is promoted to the First Division as champions. Billy Bridgeman
William Bridgeman (born 12 December 1882 - 1947) was a professional footballer who played as a forward. Career Bridgeman was born in Bromley-by-Bow in 1882. He signed for West Ham United in 1903 making his debut in a 4–1 home defeat to Bristol Rovers on 10 October. Joining West Ham from local side, Adam and Eve FC, Bridgeman scored West Ham's first ever goal at Upton Park in a 3–0 win against Millwall in September 1904. Folklore has it that he scored all three goals in this game although some references show one of the goals being scored by another player, Jack Flynn. Bridgeman left West Ham in 1906 to join Chelsea, helping them gain promotion to the First Division in 1912. 1904–05 In English Football
The 1904–05 season was the 34th season of competitive football in England. Overview Events Stockport County were replaced by Doncaster Rovers in the Second Division. At the end of the 1904–05 season, the First Division was expanded to include 20 teams; Bury and Notts County were elected back into the First Division from the Second Division. Manchester City, the previous season's FA Cup winners, were discovered to have been paying their players up to £6 or £7 per week instead of the legal maximum of £4 per week. The club's influential winger Billy Meredith was accused of bribing Aston Villa player Alex Leake and was faced with an 18-month ban from The Football Association, who further rebuked the club by dismissing five of its directors and banning a total of 17 players from ever playing for the club again. Charlie Satterthwaite
Charles Oliver Satterthwaite (2 March 1877 – 25 May 1948) was an English footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for Bury, Burton Swifts, Liverpool and Woolwich Arsenal. Career Born in Cockermouth, Cumberland, Satterthwaite played as a youth for local sides Black Diamonds and Workington before he joined Football League side Bury in 1896. Satterthwaite then moved to Burton Swifts a year later. As a striker known for his powerful shooting, he made enough of a name for himself at Burton to be signed by Liverpool in 1899. He made his Liverpool debut away to Nottingham Forest on 16 December 1899, and scored on his Anfield debut against Glossop North End on 23 December. He continued to play for Liverpool that season, scoring five goals in 18 matches, and scored five in 22 matches the following season as Liverpool won the 1900–01 First Division title. The 1903–04 season was the 33rd season of competitive football in England. For the first time ever, a London (and Southern) team, Woolwich Arsenal, were promoted to the First Division and made the league's reach nationwide. They joined champions Preston North End in the top flight, after ''the Lilywhites'' beat arch-rivals Blackpool in the final game of the season to clinch the championship. George Ratcliffe (footballer)
George Albert Ratcliffe (7 December 1876 – 4 June 1944) was an English footballer. Club career Ratcliffe played his early football in the North Staffordshire League. His football skills resulted in him being signed by Crewe Alexandra. Later he had spells at Sheffield United and Grimsby Town. In 1900, Arnold Hills decided to bring in some experienced players to his new West Ham side. He played in 17 games in his first season, bagging 4 goals. Three of those coming in the last two matches of the season. The 1901-02 season was a big improvement and he ended up as joint top scorer with Billy Grassam, scoring 10 times in 24 games. 1901–02 In English Football
The 1901–02 season was the 31st season of competitive football in England. League changes Doncaster Rovers and Bristol City replaced Walsall and New Brighton Tower in the Football League. Burton United were formed by a merger of Burton Swifts with former League side Burton Wanderers. Bristol City were the first non-London Southern side in the league. Billy Grassam
William Grassam (20 November 1878 – 1943) was a Scottish footballer who played as a forward. Career Grassam played for Scottish Junior Football Association sides Redcliffe Thistle and Maryhill before joining English side Burslem Port Vale in July 1899. He scored three goals in the opening five Second Division fixtures of the 1899–1900 campaign, and finished the season with ten goals in 41 games. In the summer of 1900 he moved on to West Ham United of the Southern League. On 1 September 1900, he became the first West Ham player to score a hat-trick, when he scored four goals on his debut against Gravesend United. The club finished sixth in 1900–01. He finished as the club's joint-top scorer (with George Ratcliffe) in 1901–02 with 10 goals. After West Ham finished tenth in 1902–03, Grassam returned to Scotland with Celtic.
