The West Chicago Public Library is the public library serving the city of West Chicago, Illinois. It is located at 118 West Washington street in downtown West Chicago. System Wide Automated Network (SWAN)
SWAN (System Wide Automated Network) is a multi-type library consortium that serves Illinois libraries. It was established in 1974. It has a membership of 97 libraries in the Chicago area, and provides service to 1 million registered library users. SWAN provides a shared online public access catalog with more than 8 million items available to patrons, with centralized cataloging and software services. SWAN is incorporated as an Illinois Intergovernmental Entity. Services Libraries that are members of the SWAN library consortium add their cardholders to a central database with access to nearly 8 million items. Cardholders can also download and stream digital books, audiobooks, movies, and music through a collection of database subscriptions. The Reaching Across Illinois Library System is a regional library system consisting of 1,250 public, academic, special, and school library members, representing more than 4,000 library facilities in Northern, West-central Illinois. The regional library system was created in 2011 when the Alliance Library System, DuPage Library System, Metropolitan Library System, North Suburban Library System, and Prairie Area Library System merged. The West Chicago City Museum, originally the Turner Town Hall, is a museum in West Chicago, Illinois. History Turner Town Hall originally functioned as the first Village Hall of West Chicago, providing police and fire control services to the community. West Chicago was originally known as Junction, as three railroads crossed through it. The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad erected the first railway station in the town in 1849, and in five years' time, the town was an important railway maintenance stop. Working on steam engines and railway cars at the time induced a great fire hazard, but there was no city services to fight the blazes.
