West Chelsea Historic District
The West Chelsea Historic District is a portion of the neighborhood of Chelsea, Manhattan, Chelsea in Manhattan, New York City. It was designated as the city's 92nd historic district in July 2008 by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. It encompasses a portion of the streets between 25th and 28th Streets between Tenth Avenue (Manhattan), Tenth Avenue and the West Side Highway and was designated as such for its architectural and manufacturing heritage. Approximately 30 structures within the district date from between 1885 and 1930 including the London Terrace Gardens, the Otis Elevator Building and the Terminal Stores building. A historic district or heritage district is a section of a city which contains older buildings considered valuable for historical or architectural reasons. New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission
The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is the New York City agency charged with administering the city's Landmarks Preservation Law. The LPC is responsible for protecting New York City's architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings and sites by granting them landmark or historic district status, and regulating them after designation. Tenth Avenue (Manhattan)
Tenth Avenue, known as Amsterdam Avenue between 59th Street and 193rd Street, is a north-south thoroughfare on the West Side of Manhattan in New York City. It carries uptown (northbound) traffic as far as West 110th Street (also known as Cathedral Parkway), after which it continues as a two-way street. Geography Tenth Avenue begins a block below Gansevoort Street and Eleventh Avenue in the West Village / Meatpacking District. For the southernmost stretch (the four blocks below 14th Street), Tenth Avenue runs southbound. North of 14th Street, Tenth Avenue runs uptown (northbound) for 45 blocks as a one-way street. West Side Highway
The Joe DiMaggio Highway, commonly called the West Side Highway and formerly the Miller Highway, is a mostly surface section of New York State Route 9A (NY 9A), running from West 72nd Street along the Hudson River to the southern tip of Manhattan in New York City. It replaced the West Side Elevated Highway, built between 1929 and 1951, which was shut down in 1973 due to neglect and lack of maintenance, and was dismantled by 1989. North of 72nd Street the roadway continues north as the Henry Hudson Parkway. The current highway was complete by 2001, but required reconstruction after the September 11 attacks that year, when the collapse of the World Trade Center caused debris to fall onto the surrounding areas, damaging the highway. London Terrace
London Terrace is an apartment building complex in the Chelsea, Manhattan, Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. It occupies an entire city block on Manhattan's West Side (Manhattan), West Side, bounded by Ninth Avenue (Manhattan), Ninth Avenue to the east, Tenth Avenue (Manhattan), Tenth Avenue to the west, 23rd Street (Manhattan), 23rd Street to the south, and 24th Street to the north. Chelsea Arts District
The Chelsea Arts District, sometimes also called the West Chelsea Arts District or the Chelsea Gallery District is a region of Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City, that runs from 18th to 28th Street between Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue that is known for its concentration of art galleries. It developed as part of the neighborhood's rezoning and shift in the international art market in the late 1990s and early 2000s. While galleries have relocated to other areas due to rising rents and the distance from the subway, new galleries have taken their place and the area remains an arts hub.
