West Bolivar Consolidated School District
The West Bolivar Consolidated School District is a public school district based in Rosedale, Mississippi (USA). It serves sections of Bolivar County. In addition to Rosedale, the district also serves the towns of Gunnison, Beulah, and Pace in western Bolivar County and Benoit and the section of Shaw in southern Bolivar County. It also serves unincorporated areas of Scott, Skene, and Symonds. History In 1925, 9-year-old Martha Lum was denied admission to Rosedale Consolidated High School (now West Bolivar High School) because she was Chinese American. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Mississippi's right to exclude her in '' Lum v. Rice''. That decision was overturned by the holding in ''Brown v. Board of Education'' in 1954. Beginning in 1986 Benoit School District students did not attend Ray Brooks School (previously Nugent Center School, a.k.a. Benoit High School), but instead West Bolivar High School. McEvans Warriors K-12 School
McEvans Warriors K-12 School, formerly Shaw High School, is a public K-12 school in Shaw, Mississippi. It is a part of the West Bolivar Consolidated School District. Until 2014 it was in the Shaw School District, which served Shaw and Skene. History The former Shaw High School building was first built in 1923. it had 158 students. Leland School District offers vocational training to Shaw High School students. McEvans Negro High School formerly existed. In 1958 the school had almost 1,000 students. The building was destroyed in a fire in 1958, causing about $115,000 in damages. Both Shaw High and McEvans Elementary were in the Shaw School District until July 1, 2014, when that district was consolidated into West Bolivar Consolidated. At one point the condition of the Shaw High building, at 214 Dean Boulevard, deteriorated to the point where the high school moved in with McEvans Elementary School. The Shaw School District was a public school district based in Shaw, Mississippi (USA). The district served the Bolivar County portion of the city; the small portion of the city that lies in Sunflower County was and is served by the Sunflower County School District. On July 1, 2014, the Shaw School District was consolidated into the West Bolivar Consolidated School District. The district served Shaw and Skene. The district operated two schools, Shaw High School and McEvans School ( elementary-middle school). Mound Bayou is a city in Bolivar County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,533 at the 2010 census, down from 2,102 in 2000. It was founded as an independent black community in 1887 by former slaves led by Isaiah Montgomery. Mound Bayou has a 96.8% African-American majority population in 2020, one of the largest of any community in the United States. The current mayor of Mound Bayou is Leighton Aldridge.
