Werner Graeff
Werner Graeff (also Gräff), 24 August 24, 1901, Wuppertal - 29 August 29, 1978, Blacksburg, Virginia) was a German sculptor, painter, graphic artist, photographer, film maker and inventor. In 1921 he started studying at the Bauhaus in Weimar. Here he soon became under the influence of Theo van Doesburg, and participated in a meeting in Weimar in May 1922 where van Doesberg, El Lissitzky and Hans Richter planned the intervention of the International Constructivist Faction at the International Congress of Progressive Artists held in Düsseldorf, 29–31 May 1922. ''G'' In 1923 he worked with Richter and Lissitzky on the production of '' G: Material zur elementaren Gestaltung'' (Journal for Elementary Construction). 1n 1928 he co-wrote the film ''Ghosts Before Breakfast'' with Hans Richter. Constructivist International (german: Konstruktivistische Internationale, KI) was an international organisation made up of avant-garde artists established in 1922 in order to co-ordinate the work of constructivist artists as an international collective style. The International Constructivist Faction The concept of the Constructivist International was first proposed at the International Congress of Progressive Artists, held in Düsseldorf, 29-31 May 1922. A few days prior to the Congress, the key actors involved in launching the KI, met together in Weimar: Theo van Doesburg, El Lissitzky, Hans Richter, Werner Graeff, Karl Peter Röhl and Cornelis van Eesteren. Marl () is a town and a municipality in the Recklinghausen (district), district of Recklinghausen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated near the Wesel-Datteln Canal, approx. 10 km north-west of Recklinghausen. It has about 90,000 people. Ghosts Before Breakfast
''Ghosts Before Breakfast'' (german: Vormittagsspuk) is a 1928 German dadaist animated short film directed by Hans Richter. It utilizes stop motion for some of its effects and live action for others. The film does not present a coherent narrative, and includes a number of seemingly arbitrary images. The original accompanying score composed by Paul Hindemith for a player piano is regarded as lost. New audio tracks have been created by artists such as The Real Tuesday Weld. British composer Ian Gardiner, who has written many scores for cinema and television, created a score for the film in 2006 (premiered by the Liverpool group Ensemble 10/10, directed by Clark Rundell). The UK ensemble Counterpoise (violin, trumpet, saxophone, piano) premiered American composer Jean Hasse's score in 2008, touring the UK - it can be seen on YouTube. ''G: Material zur elementaren Gestaltung'' (Materials for Elementary Construction) was a constructivist magazine published between 1923 and 1926 by Hans Richter. Five issues were produced, with El Lissitzky and Werner Graeff supporting him on the editorial board for the first issue. International Congress Of Progressive Artists
International Congress of Progressive Artists was organised by Young Rhineland (Junge Rheinland), with help from the November Group, the Darmstadt Secession and the Dresden Secession in Düsseldorf, 29-31 May 1922. The aim of creating an international organisation of radical artists led to differing conceptions of how this should be done. Theo van Doesburg wrote "A short review of the proceedings" which included a proclamation calling for a permanent, universal, international exhibition of art from everywhere in the world and an annual universal, international music festival. With the slogan Artists of all nationalities unite’ they declared that "Art must become international or it will perish". According to van Doesburg, when those who refused to sign this proclamation were threatened with exclusion, this led to uproar. Hans Richter (artist)
Hans Richter (6 April 1888 – 1 February 1976) was a German Dada painter, graphic artist, avant-garde film producer, and art historian. In 1965 he authored the book ''Dadaism'' about the history of the ''Dada'' movement. He was born in Berlin into a well-to-do family and died in Minusio, near Locarno, Switzerland.''Oxford Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Art'', Oxford University, p. 598 From Expressionism through Dadaism, Constructivism and Neoplasticism, he was one of the major figures of avant-garde art in the 1910s and 1920s and a catalyst for intellectuals and artists in many disciplines. Lazar Markovich Lissitzky (russian: link=no, Ла́зарь Ма́ркович Лиси́цкий, ; – 30 December 1941), better known as El Lissitzky (russian: link=no, Эль Лиси́цкий; yi, על ליסיצקי), was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist and architect. Theo Van Doesburg
Theo van Doesburg (, 30 August 1883 – 7 March 1931) was a Dutch artist, who practiced painting, writing, poetry and architecture. He is best known as the founder and leader of De Stijl. He was married to artist, pianist and choreographer Nelly van Doesburg. Early life Theo van Doesburg was born Christian Emil Marie Küpper on 30 August 1883, in Utrecht, Netherlands, as the son of the photographer and Henrietta Catherina Margadant. After a short period of training in acting and singing, he decided to become a storekeeper.
