The Peaceful Revolution (german: Friedliche Revolution), as a part of the Revolutions of 1989, was the process of sociopolitical change that led to the opening of East Germany's borders with the West, the end of the ruling of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) (communist regime) in the German Democratic Republic (GDR or "East Germany") in 1989 and the transition to a parliamentary democracy, which later enabled the reunification of Germany in October 1990. This happened through non-violent initiatives and demonstrations. This period of change is referred to in German as ' (, "the turning point"). These events were closely linked to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's decision to abandon Soviet hegemony in Eastern Europe as well as the reformist movements that spread through Eastern Bloc countries. Daniel Wende
Daniel Wende (born 24 July 1984) is a German pair skater. With Maylin Wende, he is the 2010 Trophée Eric Bompard bronze medalist, the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy silver medalist, and a two-time German national champion. They have competed twice at the Winter Olympics (2010, 2014) and have placed as high as sixth at the European Championships (2011, 2014). Career Early career After starting out as a singles skater, Wende switched to pair skating at about the age of 16–17. His first partner was Rebecca Handke. The pair twice won the German national junior title and then won the senior silver medal the next two years. They competed at five European Championships and placed as high as sixth (2005). They were also sent to two World Junior Championships, placing eleventh in 2004 and withdrawing in 2005. Their partnership ended in 2007. Horst Wende (5 November 1919 – 23 January 1996) was a German bandleader, arranger and composer. He made easy-listening records under his own name as well as under the name Roberto Delgado. He was part of the wave of German-based easy-listening artists who were popular in the 1960s and 1970s, along with Bert Kaempfert and James Last. Biography Born in Zeitz, Saxony, he showed musical proficiency at an early age. He played in his grandfather’s band in a restaurant when he was six, and by his teens he was accomplished at playing piano, accordion, xylophone and marimba. Bruno Wende
Bruno Wende (April 17, 1859 – December 27, 1929) was a private serving in the United States Army during the Spanish–American War who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Wende was born April 17, 1859, in Germany and after immigrating to the United States, entered the army from Canton, Ohio. He was sent to fight in the Spanish–American War with Company C, 17th U.S. Infantry as a private where he received the Medal of Honor for his actions. He died December 27, 1929, and is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery Cincinnati, Ohio. His grave can be found in section 70, space 1870.
