Welsh Republican Movement
The Welsh Republican Movement ( cy, Mudiad Gweriniaethol Cymru) was a Welsh nationalist political party. It was founded in 1949 as a split from Plaid Cymru. The group, some of whom had previously been members of the Labour Party aimed to build a base in industrial south east Wales by focusing on socialism and republicanism rather than on rural affairs, pacifism and the Welsh language. In 1950, the group began publishing a newspaper, ''The Welsh Republican - Y Gweriniaethwr''. It stood Ithel Davies in Ogmore in the 1950 general election, and took 1.3% of the vote. Some members of the party were arrested for burning the Union Jack, and it faced accusations of initiating violence. They also conceived a Welsh republican flag, a tricolor with green, red and white bands. Plaid Cymru ( ; ; officially Plaid Cymru – the Party of Wales, often referred to simply as Plaid) is a centre-left to left-wing, Welsh nationalist political party in Wales, committed to Welsh independence from the United Kingdom. Plaid was formed in 1925 and won its first seat in the UK Parliament in 1966. The party holds four of 40 Welsh seats in the UK Parliament, 13 of 60 seats in the Senedd, and 203 of 1,231 principal local authority councillors. It is a member of the European Free Alliance. Republicanism In Wales
Welsh republicanism ( cy, Gweriniaetholdeb Gymreig) or republicanism in Wales ( cy, Gweriniaetholdeb yng Nghymru) is the political ideology of a Welsh republic, as opposed to Wales being presided over by the monarchy of the United Kingdom. Typically, this ideology is suggested as an element of forming an independent Wales, but can also be considered as part of reforming the government system of the United Kingdom, which could include introducing an elected official as head of state. A triband is a vexillological style which consists of three stripes arranged to form a flag. These stripes may be two or three colors, and may be charged with an emblem in the middle stripe. Design Outside of the name, which requires three bands of color, there are no other requirements for what a triband must look like, so there are many flags that look very different from each other but are all considered tribands. Some triband flags (e.g. those of Croatia and Ghana) have their stripes positioned horizontally, while others (e.g. that of Italy) position the stripes vertically.
