Wellsburg Wharf
Wellsburg Wharf is a historic wharf located at Wellsburg, Brooke County, West Virginia. The public wharf was built in 1836. The site consists of remains of the wharf and the foundations of two warehouses. The wharf remains consist of cobblestones along the riverbank. One of the warehouses was built by Danforth Brown. Wellsburg, West Virginia
Wellsburg is a city in and the county seat of Brooke County, West Virginia, United States. The 2020 census recorded a population of 2,455. It is a part of the Weirton–Steubenville metropolitan area. The city's economy includes several telemarketing facilities, and a factory that does metal fabrication and plastics molding. History The town was laid out in 1790, and its post office was opened on September 1, 1870. In 1772, the Cox brothers, Friend, Israel, and Jonathan, made tomahawk rights claims totaling in the area now including Wellsburg. In March 1788, Charles Prather purchased from the Cox heirs for $3,000. In 1791, Prather petitioned Ohio County to incorporate the town of Charlestown, Virginia, naming it after himself. The original name continued until 1816, when it was changed to Wellsburg, to avoid confusion with Charles Town, Jefferson County. Brooke County, West Virginia
Brooke County is a county in the Northern Panhandle of the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,559. Its county seat is Wellsburg. The county was created in 1797 from part of Ohio County and named in honor of Robert Brooke, Governor of Virginia from 1794 to 1796. Brooke County is part of the Weirton-Steubenville, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Pittsburgh-New Castle-Weirton, PA-WV-OH Combined Statistical Area. History The Ohio Company of Virginia petitioned the British King for 500,000 acres of land in the Ohio River Valley in 1747, but the first settlers to this area, in what later became known as West Virginia's Northern Panhandle, were brothers Jonathan, Israel and Friend Cox. Cobblestone is a natural building material based on cobble-sized stones, and is used for pavement roads, streets, and buildings. Danforth Brown House, also known as Old Worrell Farm, is a historic home located near Wellsburg, Brooke County, West Virginia. It is a two-story, five-bay, brick and frame I house form dwelling in the Italianate style. The original section was built in 1823, with additions built in the 1870s.
