Weißenfels–Zeitz Railway
The Weißenfels–Zeitz railway is a single-track main line railway in the south of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It runs from Weißenfels via Teuchern to Zeitz. It was one of the main lines of the networks of ''Burgenlandbahn'', a subsidiary of DB Regio, and is now served by DB Regio Südost. History The Weißenfels–Zeitz line was opened in 1859 between Weißenfels, Zeitz and Gera. Today, it connects the Eisenach–Erfurt–Naumburg– Halle mainline railway (Thuringian Railway, german: Thüringer Bahn) and the Leipzig–Probstzella line with each other. In its early days the line was used mainly to transport manufactured goods from Zeitz to Halle and Erfurt. During the existence of East Germany (1949–1990), the line was used to transport sugar beet from the Thuringian Basin, cement from Karsdorf and coal from the region around Profen. Weißenfels
Weißenfels (; often written in English as Weissenfels) is the largest town of the Burgenlandkreis district, in southern Saxony-Anhalt, central Germany. It is situated on the river Saale, approximately south of Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, Halle. History Perhaps the first mention of the area, before the town itself was founded occurred in 806 CE, when Charles the Younger (''Karl der Jüngere''), King of the Franks, fought and killed two West Slavs, West Slavic ''Knyaz, Knezy'' (princes) nearby: duke Miliduch of the Sorbs and Nessyta (possibly also a Sorbian leader). Miliduch had led a Sorbian invasion of Austrasia. The settlement arose around a castle on a ford (crossing), ford crossing the Saale and received German town law, municipal rights in 1185. The Bundesstraße 2 (abbr. B2) is Germany's longest federal highway, running some 1000 kilometres from the Polish border near Gartz to the Austrian border near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Eisenach Station is the main station of the city of Eisenach in the German state of Thuringia. Leipzig–Probstzella Railway
The Leipzig–Probstzella railway is a line in the German states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. It runs from Leipzig through the valley of the White Elster via Zeitz, Gera, Triptis, the Orlasenke lowland and Saalfeld to Probstzella. Since it runs parallel with the Saal Railway but is higher, it is also called the ''Obere Bahn'' ("upper railway"). Route The line begins in Leipzig Leutzsch and runs south from the city. The line then runs through the flat Leipzig Bay along the Elster through the former central German lignite mining area. This section of the line was once used to transport lignite to nearby power plants, but this traffic has declined considerably.
