The Wednesday Night Wars were a period of mainstream televised American professional wrestling in which All Elite Wrestling (AEW)'s ''AEW Dynamite, Dynamite'' debuted on TNT (American TV network), TNT opposite WWE's ''WWE NXT, NXT'' on the USA Network in a competition for Nielsen ratings each week. The ratings war lasted from October 2, 2019, to April 7, 2021. This was the first direct competition between two major promotions since Impact Wrestling, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA, now Impact Wrestling), briefly moved their flagship series, ''Impact! Professional Wrestling
Professional wrestling is a form of theater that revolves around staged wrestling matches. The mock combat is performed in a ring similar to the kind used in boxing, and the dramatic aspects of pro wrestling may be performed both in the ring or—as in televised wrestling shows—in backstage areas of the venue, in similar form to reality television. Professional wrestling as a form of theater evolved out of the widespread practice of match fixing among wrestlers in the early 20th century. Paramount Network is an American basic cable television channel owned by the MTV Entertainment Group unit of Paramount Media Networks. NXT TakeOver was a series of periodic professional wrestling events produced by WWE, a professional wrestling promotion based in Connecticut. The events were produced exclusively for the promotion's NXT brand division and aired live on pay-per-view (PPV) and the livestreaming services Peacock and the WWE Network. The first TakeOver event was simply titled TakeOver and was held on May 29, 2014. TakeOver events were then held several times a year.
