Wedge Records is a 1990s California record label specializing in punk rock/ hardcore. The label is most noted for releasing early AFI and Frantics records. It was founded by Matt "Wedge" Wedgley of The Circus Tents, The Force, and Viva Hate. A record label, or record company, is a brand or trademark of music recordings and music videos, or the company that owns it. Sometimes, a record label is also a publishing company that manages such brands and trademarks, coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos, while also conducting talent scouting and development of new artists, and maintaining contracts with recording artists and their managers. Hardcore Punk
Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Punk rock in California, Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant History of the hippie movement, hippie cultural climate of the time. It was also inspired by Washington D.C. and New York City, New York punk rock and early proto-punk. AFI (band)
AFI (abbreviation for A Fire Inside) is an American rock band from Ukiah, California, formed in 1991. Since 1998, it consists of lead vocalist Davey Havok, drummer and backing vocalist Adam Carson, bassist, backing vocalist and keyboardist Hunter Burgan, and guitarist, backing vocalist and keyboardist Jade Puget. Havok and Carson are the sole remaining original members. Originally a hardcore punk band, they have since delved into many genres, starting with horror punk and following through post-hardcore and emo into alternative rock and gothic rock. AFI has released eleven studio albums, ten EPs, one live album and one DVD. The band first reached substantial commercial success with their fifth album, '' The Art of Drowning'' (2000), which peaked at number 174 on the ''Billboard'' 200. The Frantics (Clinton, South Carolina)
The Frantics was an American punk rock band from Clinton, South Carolina, United States. Founded by Kevin Mac (vocals/guitar), Timmy Timmy (guitar/vocals), Anthony Price (bass/vocals) and Todd Skeleton (drums/skinny). Drew Perry replaced Skeleton on drums in late 1998, but only recorded a handful of songs with the band. The band formed out of high school in 1995, and began recording immediately (one demo album and two 7-inch EPs in their first year). Frantics toured the U.S. through 1999, releasing two albums and two more singles during that time (along with several compilation tracks). They have toured with and/or supported touring bands including AFI, Parasites, Cletus, Against All Authority, The Pull-Outs, Blanks 77, Flatus, The Vandals, MU330, The Bouncing Souls, The Force, Zeke and Mustard Plug. 2005 saw a one-time "reunion" show for the Frantics, playing to raise funds for a cancer-stricken local club owner that booked them during their heyday. The Circus Tents
The Circus Tents were an American band active from 1989 to 1993 from Grass Valley, California, United States. It consisted of Matt Wedgley as the lead vocalist, Jon Sortland on drums, Chad Cox on bass, Scot Pickering and Jeff Jones on guitar. They released a 12 song self-titled cassette tape in 1990 (only 100 copies being made) and a 4 song 7" record titled ''Hard Up'' on Insurrection Records in 1992 (only having 1,000 copies made). They had a couple of songs featured on early Powell Peralta skate videos for Chris Senn. They achieved international publicity when Billie Joe Armstrong put a Circus Tents sticker on his guitar and AFI covered their song "Open Your Eyes" on their record ''Answer That and Stay Fashionable''. The Force (band)
The Force was an American, Grass Valley, California-based punk/hardcore band. Members Matt Wedgley (Viva Hate, Dirty Filthy Mugs), Hunter Burgan (AFI), Mark Roustabout (The Roustabouts), and Chad Cox were all in different punk bands, before forming The Force in May 1995. Between 1996 and 1998, The Force released a single, an EP and a split single", as well as a number of songs on compilation albums. The Force split up in September 1998. Since then, members of The Force have gone on to form or join several notable bands. On August 28–31, 2008, The Force reunited for the first time in ten years to play four shows in California. Viva Hate (band)
Viva Hate is a rock band that was formed late in the summer of 2004 by Geoff Kresge after he left Tiger Army. Shortly after forming Viva Hate, Kresge was asked to join the HorrorPops, with whom he played guitar with from 2004 to 2006, although the official statement of his departure was not made until the summer of 2007, leaving many questions regarding the nature of his parting ways with the HorrorPops. Kresge was previously the bassist for AFI from 1992 to 1997. Lead vocalist Matt Wedgley was formerly a member of The Force with Hunter Burgan of AFI. In February 2007, the band announced that Greg McEntee of Swingin' Utters joined on drums. He replaced original drummer Mad Dog Chad! from the psychobilly band 12 Step Rebels that Kresge had previously produced, who left the band to focus on his own project, Ends !n Tragedy.
