The Wechsel Pass (elevation 980 m, 3,215 ft) is a mountain pass in the Austrian Alps, located between the '' Bundesländer'' of Lower Austria and Styria. Along with the Semmering Pass, the Wechsel Pass is one of the most important connections between Lower Austria and Styria. Until the A2 Autobahn was built in the 1980s, it was the major highway between Vienna and Graz. Austria, , bar, Östareich officially the Republic of Austria, is a country in the southern part of Central Europe, lying in the Eastern Alps. It is a federation of nine states, one of which is the capital, Vienna, the most populous city and state. A landlocked country, Austria is bordered by Germany to the northwest, the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The country occupies an area of and has a population of 9 million. Austria emerged from the remnants of the Eastern and Hungarian March at the end of the first millennium. Originally a margraviate of Bavaria, it developed into a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire in 1156 and was later made an archduchy in 1453.
