Wayne Westner
Wayne Brett Westner (28 September 1961 4 January 2017) was a South African golfer. He was twice winner of the South African Open and also won twice on the European Tour. In partnership with Ernie Els, they won the 1996 World Cup of Golf, played at the Erinvale Golf Club near Cape Town. Els won the individual event with Westner second and the pair won the team event by 18 shots. Early life Westner was born in Johannesburg. Professional career In 1981, he turned professional. He won several events in his home country, including two South African Opens. He spent many years on the European Tour where he won two tournaments and had a best Order of Merit finish of twentieth in 1993. Dubai Desert Classic
The Dubai Desert Classic is a European Tour golf tournament held on Majlis course at Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In 1999 and 2000 it was held at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, all other editions have been held at Emirates Golf Club. History When founded in 1989, it was the first European Tour event to be staged in the Arabian Peninsula, but is currently one of six. 1990–91 Southern Africa Tour
The 1990–91 Southern Africa Tour was the 20th season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Season outline The early half of the season was dominated by John Bland and Fulton Allem who alternated between wins for the first six events. The first event of the season was a medal match play event, the Minolta Copiers Match Play, with Bland victorious. Allem won the next event, the Twee Jonge Gezellen Masters with Bland finishing solo third. At the following event, the Bloemfontein Classic, Bland was victorious. Allem returned the favor the following week when he won the Goodyear Classic by two shots from Bland. Bland won the first event after the Christmas break, the Palabora Classic. Ian Mosey
Ian James Mosey (born 29 August 1951) is an English professional golfer. Early life Mosey was born in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire, and is the son of cricket writer Don Mosey. Professional career Mosey turned professional in 1972 and spent almost twenty years on the European Tour, during which his best Order of Merit ranking was 29th, achieved in both 1984 and 1986. He won two tournaments on the European Tour, the 1980 Merseyside International Open and the 1984 Monte Carlo Open. Southern Suns South African Open
The South African Open is one of the oldest national open golf championships in the world, having first been played in 1903, and is one of the principal tournaments on the Southern-Africa-based Sunshine Tour. Since 1997 it has also been co-sanctioned by the European Tour. History The first formal event was organised in 1903, following a series of exhibition matches that had been held over the preceding ten years. The championship was initially contested over just 36 holes until 1908, when it was extended to become a 72-hole tournament. Although non-whites had played in the South African Open before, most notably when Papwa Sewgolum finished second in 1963, it was not until 1972 that black golfers were allowed to compete. The 1987–88 Southern Africa Tour was the 17th season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Season outline Local golfers from Zimbabwe and South African had success at the beginning of the season. At the first event, the Minolta Copiers Match Play, Zimbabwe's Tony Johnstone defeated countryman Mark McNulty 66 to 69 in the medal match play final to claim victory. At the second tournament of the season, the Protea Assurance Classic, South Africa's Bobby Lincoln defeated compatriot Fulton Allem by one shot. Allan Henning
Allan Henning (born 1 June 1944) is a former professional golfer from South Africa. Henning was born into a golfing family. His brothers Harold, Brian, and Graham all became professional golfers. Henning turned professional in 1962 and won 18 tournaments on the South African Sunshine Tour between 1963 and 1980. His biggest win was the South African Open when it was played twice in 1963. Henning also had 4 playoff losses and 3 runner up positions in the South African Open. He also secured a big win at the South African Masters in 1968. Henning won the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit in two consecutive seasons, in 1974/75 and 1975/76. He represented SA in World Cup and World Series of Golf. Henning was also the first to score a record 61 at the Toro Classic played at Glendower GC in 1976. 1982–83 Southern Africa Tour
The 1982–83 Southern Africa Tour was the 12th season of the Southern Africa Tour. The early part of the season was dominated by two unheralded Americans Corey Pavin and Charlie Bolling. They respectively won the top two events, the Lexington PGA and Datsun South African Open. In the middle of the season a number of local golfers won their first events on tour, including Wayne Westner, Gavan Levenson, and Teddy Webber. It was winless Nick Price, however, who won the Order of Merit by virtue of a number of runner-up finishes. 1992 European Tour
The 1992 European Tour, titled as the 1992 Volvo Tour for sponsorship reasons, was the 21st official season of golf tournaments known as the PGA European Tour. The European Tour ventured to East Asia for the first time, with the addition of the Johnnie Walker Asian Classic in Thailand to the tour schedule. The season was made up of 38 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and five non-counting "Approved Special Events". The Order of Merit was won by England's Nick Faldo for the second time; he previously won the title in 1983. Southern Africa Tour
The Sunshine Tour is a men's professional golf tour based in Southern and East Africa. For much of its early history it was known either as the South African Tour or Sunshine Circuit; through sponsorship deals, it has also been known as the Vodacom Tour and the FNB Tour. For the 2000–01 season the tour rebranded itself as the ''Sunshine Tour'' in an attempt to broaden its appeal. A large majority of the tour events are still staged in South Africa. José Cóceres
José Eusebio Cóceres (born 14 August 1963) is an Argentine professional golfer who spent many years on the European Tour and the PGA Tour. Cóceres was born in Argentina's Chaco province. He is one of 11 children who grew up in a two-bedroom house. He became a caddie and taught himself the game. Cóceres turned professional in 1986 and won a place on the European Tour at the 1990 Qualifying School. After struggling in 1991 and 1992 he performed steadily on the tour from 1993 onwards, and in 2000 he reached a career high of thirteenth on the Order of Merit.
