Waylander are a Northern Irish folk metal band influential in the realms of Celtic metal. Formed in 1993, the band blends traditional Folk music of Ireland, Irish folk with 1990s Heavy metal music, heavy metal. Biography Formed in 1993, Waylander released their debut demo, ''Once Upon an Era'', in early 1995, mixing Irish folk music with extreme metal. Waylander were soon dubbed folk, Celtic and pagan metal. In 1996, with the addition of a full-time tin whistle player, Waylander released their second demo, ''Dawning of a New Age'', which soon gained the band a prominent position in the folk metal scene. This was cemented when Waylander signed to Century Media Records, and in 1998 their debut album was released, entitled ''Reawakening Pride Once Lost''. A handful of gigs were undertaken to promote this album but label problems and internal strife blunted the potential somewhat. Pagan Metal
Pagan metal is a genre of heavy metal music which fuses extreme metal with " the pre-Christian traditions of a specific culture or region" through thematic concept, rustic melodies, unusual instruments or archaic languages, Wiederhorn 2009, p. 62. usually referring to folk metal or black metal. The Norwegian band In the Woods... was one of the first bands commonly viewed as pagan metal. ''Metal Hammer'' author Marc Halupczok wrote that Primordial's song "To Enter Pagan" from the band's demo " Dark Romanticism" contributed to defining the genre. Characteristics Pagan metal is "more of an idea than a genre" and consequently bands tend to be "wildly different" from one another. Skyforger
Skyforger is a heavy metal band from Latvia which was formed in 1995 out of the remains of doom metal band Grindmaster Dead. Musical style and lyrical themes Most of their songs are about Baltic mythology and warfare; they also play Latvian folk songs and their metal arrangements. Although Skyforger is known for their folk metal, the style on their demo ' is essentially black metal. The band also has performed and recorded a number of folk songs, including the entirety of their acoustic fourth album ', released in 2003. Folk elements can be found on all of their albums. Sabbat (English Band)
Sabbat were an English thrash metal band from Nottingham consisting of Martin Walkyier (vocals), Andy Sneap (guitars), Simon Jones (guitars), Frazer Craske (bass) and Simon Negus (drums). They are considered one of the "big four" of British thrash metal along with Acid Reign, Onslaught, and Xentrix, who were all responsible for developing and popularizing the country's thrash metal scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Over their initial six-year run Sabbat released three studio albums, four demos, two split singles/compilation albums, two singles and a live VHS. Cathedral were a doom metal band from Coventry, England. The group gained attention upon release of its debut album, ''Forest of Equilibrium'' (1991), which is considered a classic of the genre. Ancient Rites is a Belgian black metal band formed in 1988. Day Of Darkness
Day of Darkness was the original name of Ireland's D.O.D. Festival. It happened annually in Ballylinan from 2002 to 2008 as a metal music festival. The 2002 line-up was headlined by Primordial. It ran for a second year in 2003. Numbers, however, dwindled that year and a number of changes were implemented before the festival's third running in 2004. In 2005, the festival was moved to the first week in July and has been held on the same weekend each year since. In 2006, a second day was added to the festival and camping tickets were introduced. Bloodstock Open Air is a British heavy metal music, heavy metal rock festival, festival held annually at Catton Hall in Walton-on-Trent, Derbyshire, since 2005. Originally held indoors for one day with two stages, the festival started in 2001 at the Derby Assembly Rooms and has expanded over the years. It became an outdoor event in 2005.
