''Way Beyond Blue'' is the debut album by Welsh band Catatonia. It has been seen by many fans as being something of a compilation album, as all but five on the album had appeared on one of the band's early EPs or singles, albeit different renditions (see below). It spawned the band's first top 40 hit, "You've Got a Lot to Answer For" which hit No. 35. Cerys Matthews
Cerys Matthews (; born 11 April 1969) is a Welsh singer, songwriter, author, and broadcaster. She was a founding member of Welsh rock band Catatonia and a leading figure in the "Cool Cymru" movement of the late 1990s. Matthews programmes and hosts a weekly music show on BBC Radio 6 Music, a weekly blues show on BBC Radio 2, and a weekly show on BBC Radio 4 'Add To Playlist' which won the Prix Italia and Prix Europa 2022. She also makes documentaries for television and radio and was a roving reporter for ''The One Show''. Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric behavioral syndrome that is characterized by abnormal movements, immobility, abnormal behaviors, and withdrawal. The onset of catatonia can be acute or subtle and symptoms can wax, wane, or change during episodes. It has historically been related to schizophrenia (catatonic schizophrenia), catatonia is most often seen in mood disorders. Dafydd Ieuan
Dafydd Ieuan (born 1 March 1969) is a Welsh musician and producer, best known as the drummer with the band Super Furry Animals, The Peth and The Earth (band). Ieuan played with Gruff Rhys in their early band Ffa Coffi Pawb. He was a drummer for Welsh band Catatonia from 1993 to 1996, recording on their early singles and debut album ''Way Beyond Blue'' released in 1996. During the same period Super Furry Animals formed and Ieuan left Catatonia to focus on them. Ieuan runs the Cardiff-based label and recording studio Strangetown Records with brother Cian Ciaran and Mick Hilton. With Ciaran, he was awarded by BAFTA Wales 2011 for Original Music for the S4C drama ''Pen Talar'' filmed by Fiction Factory. Ieuan released ''The Golden Mile'' with The Peth ("The Thing" in Welsh) in 2008, with Welsh actor Rhys Ifans on vocals. A second album, ''Crystal Peth'' has been recorded but has yet to be released. Aled Richards
Aled Richards (born in 1969) is a Welsh drummer and was a member of the Welsh rock band Catatonia. Early life Richards started to play drums when he was young, born and living in Wales. Richards joined the band Catatonia in 1996, who were on the verge of signing a deal with the major record label, Warner Brothers. Catatonia Richards joined Catatonia when they were signing a deal with Warner Brothers Richards played with the band in all of their shows ranging from Glastonbury Festival to playing in Wembley in support of NetAid and TV performances such as '' Later... with Jools Holland'', and ''Top Of The Pops''. Owen Powell
Owen Powell (born 1967) is a Welsh guitarist. He played in the Welsh rock band Catatonia from 1995 until the band disbanded in 2001. Career Catatonia Powell joined Catatonia in 1995 as a second guitarist. He went on to write for the band, including " Strange Glue" and "My Selfish Gene" from '' International Velvet'', and "Nothing Hurts" and "Dazed Beautiful and Bruised" from '' Equally Cursed and Blessed''. Whale (song)
"Whale" is the debut single by Welsh band Catatonia, released in 1994 as a non-album release on the Rough Trade label. It later appeared on the compilation album ''The Sublime Magic of Catatonia'', and was re-recorded for Catatonia's first studio album, ''Way Beyond Blue''. Recording and release A Welsh-language version of the song, "Gwe", was recorded as a session for Radio Cymru on 8 April 1993, and subsequently released in 1995 on an Ankst compilation album. The English-language "Whale" was first released as part of the Rough Trade record club for new bands, formed by Rough Trade Records. The release was recorded at the Cabin Recording Studios in Coventry. The location was chosen as band member Paul Jones was familiar with it, and Rough Trade had indicated that they would only release the single in September 1994; the band had only been informed of this the month prior. For Tinkerbell
''For Tinkerbell'' is the debut extended play by Welsh band Catatonia, and also their first release. It features five tracks, some of which were later re-recorded on their first studio album ''Way Beyond Blue''. All the tracks were later compiled with those from the ''Hooked'' EP on '' The Crai-EPs 1993/1994''. Recording ''For Tinkerbell'' was self produced by the band, released on the Crai record label. The cover of the extended play was a photograph by Roland Dafis, who was a friend of band members Cerys Matthews and Mark Roberts. He had previously taken photographs for Roberts' former band Y Cyrff, and for ''For Tinkerbell'', the photograph featured a cherub ornament from Dafis' sideboard which he had bought from Poundstretcher. There were five tracks on the EP; "For Tinkerbell", "New Mercurial Heights", "Dimbran", "Sweet Catatonia" and the Welsh language version of "New Mercurial Heights", "Gyda Gwen". Mark Roberts (singer)
Mark Roberts (born 3 November 1967) is a Welsh rock musician, first known as a founding member of Y Cyrff. He then met Cerys Matthews and formed Catatonia along with Paul Jones. Career Roberts claimed for a number of years that he had stumbled across Matthews busking in Cardiff and offered her a guitar string she was missing, which led to their collaboration. The two had actually met busking, and were roommates by the time they formed the band. The string story was later revealed to be a fabrication by the band's publicist. Their split ended their songwriting partnership, and subsequently Roberts was responsible for much of the band's lyrical output. In Catatonia, Roberts shared main songwriting duties with Matthews, whilst also playing guitar and providing backing vocals. Catatonia (band)
Catatonia were an alternative rock band from Wales who gained popularity in the mid-to-late 1990s. The band formed in 1992 after Mark Roberts met Cerys Matthews and Kirsty Kennedy. The first major lineup featured Dafydd Ieuan of Super Furry Animals on drums, Paul Jones on bass, and Clancy Pegg on keyboards. With this line-up the band recorded two EPs, ''For Tinkerbell'' and ''Hooked''. Pegg was fired prior to work on their first studio album, ''Way Beyond Blue'', and during the recording of the album the band was joined by drummer Aled Richards, replacing Ieuan, who left to focus full-time on Super Furry Animals. During the live promotional appearances for the album the band was joined by guitarist Owen Powell. This latest incarnation of the band lasted until its dissolution in 2001.
