Cerys Matthews
Cerys Matthews (; born 11 April 1969) is a Welsh singer, songwriter, author, and broadcaster. She was a founding member of Welsh rock band Catatonia and a leading figure in the "Cool Cymru" movement of the late 1990s. Matthews programmes and hosts a weekly music show on BBC Radio 6 Music, a weekly blues show on BBC Radio 2, and a weekly show on BBC Radio 4 'Add To Playlist' which won the Prix Italia and Prix Europa 2022. She also makes documentaries for television and radio and was a roving reporter for ''The One Show''. She founded 'The Good Life Experience', a festival of culture and the great outdoors in Flintshire in 2014, and is author of ''Hook, Line and Singer'' published by Penguin Books and children's stories ''Tales from the Deep'' and ''Gelert, A Man's Best Friend'', published by Gomer.Her illustrated version of Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood is released November 2022 published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Gomer Press
Gomer Press (Welsh: ''Gwasg Gomer'') is a family printing (and formerly publishing) company based in Llandysul, west Wales. It was the largest publishing house in Wales. History The company was first established in 1892 and began as a general store and printer; it is owned by the same family to this day. Jonathan Lewis, the great grandson of the company's founder, became managing director in 1995. In September 2019, it was announced that Gomer would be closing their publishing arm to focus on printing. Its 55 employees were retained but would no longer publish new titles, of which it produced 36 in 2018. This marked the end of 66 years of publishing. Road Rage (Catatonia Song)
"Road Rage" is a song recorded by Welsh band Catatonia, taken from their second studio album, '' International Velvet'' (1998). It was written by band member Mark Roberts, with the production credit given generally to the band. "Road Rage" was released as the third single from the album on 20 April 1998, following their breakthrough success with the song " Mulder and Scully". The title "Road Rage" was based on the murder of Lee Harvey by his girlfriend Tracie Andrews in December 1996, something for which singer Cerys Matthews later apologised to Harvey's mother. "Road Rage" was received positively by the press, with particular praise given to the way that Matthews rolled the r's in the chorus of the song. "Dead from the Waist Down" is a song by Welsh rock band Catatonia, taken from their third studio album, '' Equally Cursed and Blessed''. It was written by Mark Roberts with Catatonia and produced by the band and TommyD. Released on 29 March 1999, the song reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart and was the band's only song to chart in New Zealand, where it peaked at number 44. Recording and release The first version of "Dead from the Waist Down" was recorded by Mark Roberts of Catatonia on a DPS12 hard disk recorder, while the band was on an American tour. It featured Roberts playing a guitar, as well as rough ideas for the chorus. He had written the song about being on tour in Los Angeles, and having members of the band's entourage who weren't enjoying themselves. "Mulder and Scully" is a song by Welsh alternative rock band Catatonia, released as a single from their 1998 album, '' International Velvet''. The song makes direct reference to fictional FBI special agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), the two main characters of the popular sci-fi TV series ''The X-Files'' who work on cases linked to the paranormal, called X-Files. In an interview Cerys Matthews, co-writer of the song, explained that while she was not a serious fan of the show, the basic premise of the series matched the concept of what she was trying to express. Mark Roberts (singer)
Mark Roberts (born 3 November 1967) is a Welsh rock musician, first known as a founding member of Y Cyrff. He then met Cerys Matthews and formed Catatonia along with Paul Jones. Career Roberts claimed for a number of years that he had stumbled across Matthews busking in Cardiff and offered her a guitar string she was missing, which led to their collaboration. The two had actually met busking, and were roommates by the time they formed the band. The string story was later revealed to be a fabrication by the band's publicist. Their split ended their songwriting partnership, and subsequently Roberts was responsible for much of the band's lyrical output. In Catatonia, Roberts shared main songwriting duties with Matthews, whilst also playing guitar and providing backing vocals. Dylan Marlais Thomas (27 October 1914 – 9 November 1953) was a Welsh poet and writer whose works include the poems "Do not go gentle into that good night" and "And death shall have no dominion", as well as the "play for voices" ''Under Milk Wood''. He also wrote stories and radio broadcasts such as ''A Child's Christmas in Wales'' and ''Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog''. He became widely popular in his lifetime and remained so after his death at the age of 39 in New York City. Pippi Longstocking ( sv, Pippi Långstrump) is the fictional main character in an eponymous series of children's books by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. Pippi was named by Lindgren's daughter Karin, who asked her mother for a get-well story when she was off school. Pippi is red-haired, freckled, unconventional and superhumanly strong – able to lift her horse one-handed. She is playful and unpredictable. Trefin
Trefin ( Welsh standardised:), formerly anglicised as Trevine, is a village in North Pembrokeshire, south-west Wales. The village lies within the parish and community of Llanrhian, which has a significant Welsh-speaking population. Etymology The name "Trefin" possibly derives from "Tref" meaning farmstead, and "Ddyn" meaning high ground.
