Watkins Abbitt Jr.
Watkins Moorman Abbitt Jr. (born October 20, 1944) was an American politician. He was a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Biography Abbitt was born in Appomattox, Virginia. He attended Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia, and earned a BS in Economics from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1985 and served from 1986 until his retirement in 2012. He did not seek re-election in 2011 and was succeeded by Matt Fariss. The American Conservative Union gave him a 100% evaluation in 2011. Originally a Democrat, he switched to independent status in 2001 and started caucusing with the Republicans. Until 2012, Abbitt represented the 59th district in the Virginia Piedmont, including four counties and parts of three others.Virginia House of Delegates; Watkins M. Virginia's 59th House Of Delegates District
Virginia's 59th House of Delegates district elects one of 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature. District 59 represents part of Appomattox and Buckingham counties, as well as parts of Albemarle, Campbell, and Nelson counties. The seat is currently held by Republican C. Matthew Fariss. Elections 2017 In the November 2017 election, Fariss was part of a four-way race, running against Democrat Tracy Carver, who is a mechanic based in Albemarle; Green Party Marcus Sutphin, who is a business owner in Concord; and independent David Ball from Buckingham County. Watkins "Wat" Moorman Abbitt (May 21, 1908 – July 13, 1998) was an American politician and lawyer. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Virginia from February 17, 1948 to January 3, 1973. He was a top lieutenant within the Byrd Organization, the political machine named for its leader, U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd. Early and family life Abbitt was born in Lynchburg, Virginia to George Francis Abbitt and Otway C. Moorman Abbitt. He graduated from Appomattox Agricultural High School in Appomattox, Virginia in 1925. He earned an LL.B. from the University of Richmond in 1931 and began the practice of law in Appomattox.
