Waterfront (St Helier)
The Waterfront (Jèrriais: Quartchi du Hâvre, French: Quartier du Havre) is a district of St Helier in the island of Jersey. It is built on reclaimed land to the west of the Albert Pier and to the south of the Esplanade, however the definition is ambiguous and can be extended to cover older parts of the town History On 24 April 1979, a States Committee was formed to investigate alternatives for reclamation because La Collette was due to be filled six years ahead of schedule. In September that year, they reported on a new scheme of roughly 160 vergées (29 hectares). However, it was considered that this would not be ready in time and would outstrip the supply of filling material in the island. Alternatively, it was proposed a smaller area of around 20 vergées to increase the working space on the Albert Pier. St Helier (; Jèrriais: ; french: Saint-Hélier) is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel. St Helier has a population of 35,822 – over one-third of the total population of Jersey – and is the Capital city, capital of the island. The town of St Helier is the largest settlement and only town of Jersey. The town consists of the built-up areas of St Helier, including First Tower, and parts of the parishes of Saint Saviour, Jersey, St Saviour and Saint Clement, Jersey, St Clement, with further suburbs in surrounding parishes. Carbuncle Cup
The Carbuncle Cup was an architecture prize, given annually by the magazine ''Building Design'' to "the ugliest building in the United Kingdom completed in the last 12 months". It was intended to be a humorous response to the prestigious Stirling Prize, given by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The cup was launched in 2006, with the first winner being Drake Circus Shopping Centre in Plymouth by Chapman Taylor. A shortlist was announced by the periodical each year, based on nominations from the public, and usually in the same week as the Stirling Prize shortlist. Free voting via the magazine's website was at first used to select the winner. From 2009 onwards, a small group of critics selected the winner. The award was inspired by the Carbuncle Awards that Scottish architecture magazine '' Urban Realm'', formerly ''Prospect'', had been presenting to buildings and areas in Scotland since 2000. Will Alsop
William Allen Alsop (12 December 1947 – 12 May 2018) was a British architect and Professor of Architecture at University for the Creative Arts's Canterbury School of Architecture. He was responsible for several distinctive and controversial modernist buildings which are usually distinguished by their use of bright colours and unusual ''avant-garde'' forms. In 2000, Alsop won the Stirling Prize, the most prestigious architecture award in the United Kingdom, for the Peckham Library in London. The Twentieth Century Society
The Twentieth Century Society (C20) is a British charity which campaigns for the preservation of architectural heritage from 1914 onwards. The society's interests embrace buildings and artefacts that characterise 20th-century Britain. It is formally recognised as one of the National Amenity Societies, and as such is a statutory consultee on alterations to listed buildings within its period of interest, and must be notified of any proposed work to a listed building which involves any element of demolition. The society was formed as The Thirties Society in 1979, the year in which the prominent "Thirties – British art and design before the War" exhibition was shown at the Hayward Gallery. Its establishment was inspired by and loosely modelled on the Victorian Society, which aims to protect pre-1914 Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Super League Triathlon
Super League Triathlon is a league of nonstandard triathlon-based races held in the traditional off-season of the sport. Every race involves a swim, bike and run element but all contain additional rules in an aim to test athletic ability, increase viewer excitement and increase the popularity of triathlon more globally.
