Washington Freedom (cricket)
The Washington Freedom are an American professional Twenty20 cricket team that competes in Major League Cricket (MLC). The team is based in Washington, D.C. and was announced in 2023 as one of six inaugural franchises to play in Major League Cricket. The Freedom is owned by Indian American entrepreneur Sanjay Govil. The team plans to have their home ground at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. The stadium is planned to host both cricket and baseball games and support up to 12,000 spectators upon its completion in summer 2025. The team is coached by Greg Shipperd, who currently coaches the Sydney Sixers, and is captained by Sixers captain Moises Henriques. The Sydney Sixers are an Australian professional franchise men's cricket team, competing in Australia's domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League (BBL). Along with the Sydney Thunder, the Sixers are the successors of the New South Wales Blues who played in the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. Dane Leeroy Piedt (born 6 March 1990) is a South African former cricketer. He played for the Cape Cobras. He made his Test cricket debut for South Africa against Zimbabwe in August 2014. In March 2020, Piedt announced his retirement from cricket in South Africa, and later moved to the United States.
