Washington Avenue Bridge (Waterbury, Connecticut)
The Washington Avenue Bridge is a historic lenticular truss bridge carrying Washington Avenue over the Mad River in Waterbury, Connecticut. Built in 1881, it is the oldest known surviving example of a lenticular pony truss bridge built by the Corrugated Metal Company, later known as the Berlin Iron Bridge Company, a prolific bridge maker in New England of the late 19th century. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Description and history The Washington Avenue Bridge stands in a busy industrial and commercial area south of downtown Waterbury, carrying Washington Avenue over the Mad River just west of South Main Street. The bridge is oriented east-west while the river flows from northeast to southwest, resulting in an offset of the trusses which historically supported its weight. The trusses are lenticular pony trusses fabricated out of wrought iron, with pinned connections and decorative finials atop the posts supporting the truss ends. The ... Washington Avenue Bridge (Iowa Falls, Iowa)
The Washington Avenue Bridge in Iowa Falls, Iowa is an attractive concrete two-span open spandrel arched bridge that brings Washington Avenue over the Iowa River. Originally it carried US 20. It was built in 1934 by the Weldon Brothers for $51,710.55. In the 1920s and 1930s if a relatively long bridge was required in a rural area, it would have been built using steel trusses, but in this urban setting where there is enough height in the bridge to allow wide arches, a concrete open-spandrel arch bridge could be built, and be worthwhile for its attractiveness. In Iowa, the Mederville Bridge (1918), the Adair Viaduct (1923) and the Iowa Falls Bridge (1928, also built by the Weldon Brothers) are other examples, but the Washington Avenue bridge is notable as a well-preserved two-span example. with It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Washington Avenue Bridge (Minneapolis)
The Washington Avenue Bridge carries County Road 122 and the METRO Green Line light rail across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis and connects the East Bank and West Bank portions of the University of Minnesota campus. The bridge has two decks, with the lower deck designated for motor vehicle traffic and light rail trains and the upper deck used for pedestrians and bicycles (lanes specifically for bikes are on the north side). It is a utilitarian structure with simple architecture, but it has cultural significance because thousands of students, faculty, staff, and visitors walk across it every day. Most users of the bridge get across it using some mode other than a personal automobile. Minnesota Department of Transportation traffic counts from 2007 show the bridge carried about 28,400 vehicles per day at that time. Washington Avenue Bridge (Waco, Texas)
The Washington Avenue Bridge in Waco, Texas was built in 1902 and was then the longest single-span vehicular truss bridge in Texas. It has a span across the Brazos River. It provided for traffic circulation in addition to that provided by the 1870-built Waco Suspension Bridge one block downriver (east). The bridge cost $93,399 for its construction, not including $1,850 for railings and approach spans. Its cost was split by McLennan County and the City of Waco, which became equal owners. Another Black man, Jim Lawyer, was attacked for objecting to the lynching. Texas Rangers looked on the violence and did not intervene.
