Warsaw, also known as Jamestown, is an unincorporated community in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. History The community was originally called Jamestown, in honor of Jamestown, Virginia. The name was then changed to Warsaw, likely in honor of Warsaw, Virginia, where some of the earlier settlers of the area arrived from. Area codes 205 and 659 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the western and central parts of the U.S. State of Alabama, including the cities of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Area code 205 was one of the original area codes created in 1947 when the NANP was placed in operation by AT&T. It encompassed the entire state, making Alabama one of 34 states served by a single numbering plan area. By the 1990s, 205 was on the brink of exhaustion due to the state's growth and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. Warsaw is an incorporated Town in and the County Seat of Richmond County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,637 at the 2020 census and is estimated to be 2,281 as of 2022. History The original name of the Town was Richmond Courthouse. In 1831 the Town's name was changed to Warsaw, after the news of the bloody Battle of Warsaw reached local residents. A number of other small towns in the United States changed their names to Warsaw at this time (Warsaw, Kentucky for instance), all as a result of sympathy in the United States for the November Uprising in Poland.
