Warren Township is one of the sixteen townships of Belmont County, Ohio, United States. The 2020 census found 5,743 people in the township. Geography Located in the western part of the county, it borders the following townships: * Kirkwood Township - north * Goshen Township - east * Wayne Township - southeast corner * Somerset Township - south * Millwood Township, Guernsey County - west * Oxford Township, Guernsey County - northwest The village of Barnesville is located in central Warren Township. Name and history Warren Township was organized about 1806–1807. It is one of five Warren Townships statewide. In 1833, several gristmills and saw mills were being operating in Warren Township, powered by the waters of Captina Creek and the Stillwater River. Captina Creek
Captina Creek is a long creek located in southeastern Ohio, and a tributary of the Ohio River. Captina Creek is an important creek to the region and home to about 56 species of fish. History In April 1774, the frontiersman Michael Cresap was accused of killing two Indians at the mouth of Captina Creek in revenge for the murder of a white trader earlier that month. He was later exonerated, but this and the subsequent Yellow Creek Massacre were the flashpoint incidents that set off Lord Dunmore's War. There is a plaque located inside a gazebo on the Powhatan Point village fair grounds dedicated to George Washington at the mouth of the creek. The plaque states that Washington had set camp for a night at the mouth of Captina creek while exploring the Ohio Valley. The gas industry has a heavy presence in Belmont County, and has caused several spills that may have damaged the ecosystem around Captina Creek. Barnesville, Ohio
Barnesville is a village in Belmont County, Ohio, United States. It is located in the central portion of Warren Township in Belmont County and is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,193 at the 2010 census. History The town was named after James Barnes, who was the first settler. Barnes was born in Montgomery County, Maryland and was married to Nancy Harrison, "an intelligent Quaker lady". Barnes owned a farm in Montgomery County, and later laid out a town there, also known as Barnesville, Maryland, where he operated a country store for a while. In 1803 he moved to St. Clairsville, Ohio where he operated a tavern and general store. In 1806 Barnes settled in Warren Township in Belmont County where he cleared forest, built a house, established a tannery and general store and planted orchards.
