Warren Stormes Hale
Warren Stormes Hale (1791–1872) was Lord Mayor of London and founder of the City of London School. Early life He was born on 2 February 1791, was orphaned and became an apprentice candlemaker or chandler; he was later twice Master of the Tallow Chandlers' Company. Career He was elected to the Common Council of the City of London in 1825, as an Alderman in 1856. he later became Sheriff in 1858 and Lord Mayor in 1864. He is regarded as the second founder of the City of London School, responsible for using the surplus from the bequest of its original founder, John Carpenter. Death He died on 23 August 1872 and is buried at Highgate Cemetery Highgate Cemetery is a place of burial in north London, England. Chandlery
A chandlery was originally the office in a wealthy medieval household responsible for wax and candles, as well as the room in which the candles were kept. It could be headed by a chandler. The office was subordinated to the kitchen, and only existed as a separate office in larger households. Whether a separate office or not, the function was naturally an important one, in a time before electric light, and when production of candles was often done privately. It was closely connected with other offices of the household, such as the ewery and the scullery. While this usage is obsolete today, the term can refer to a candle business. The current meaning of "chandler" is a person who sells candles. By the 18th century, most commercial chandlers dealt in candles, oils, soap, and even paint. As these provided ships' stores, ''chandlery'' came to refer to a shop selling nautical items for ships and boats, although for a time they were called '' ship-chandleries'' to distinguish them. Tallow Chandlers' Company
The Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers is one of the ancient livery companies of the City of London. The organisation, which engaged not only in tallow candle making but also in the trade of oils, first received a Royal Charter in 1462. Traditionally tallow chandlers operated separately from wax chandlers: beeswax candles customarily being used in churches and noble houses, while tallow (animal fat) candles were generally used in other homes. As is the case with most other livery companies, the Tallow Chandlers' Company is no longer a trade association of candlemakers, its decline precipitated by the advent of electric lighting. The company now exists as a charitable institution and supports education in oil-related fields. The company ranks 21st in the Precedence of Livery Companies in the City of London.
