Warren A. Thompson
Warren A. Thompson (May 10, 1802 – July 14, 1891) was a noted explorer and original settler of Butler County, Alabama. Explorations Thompson went with Captain John H. Watts and Thomas Hill on their many explorations throughout Butler County, and had the particular honor of naming the many creeks found in the area. Butler County, Alabama
Butler County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,051. Its county seat is Greenville. Its name is in honor of Captain William Butler, who was born in Virginia and fought in the Creek War, and who was killed in May 1818. History Butler County was formed from Conecuh County, Alabama, and Monroe County, Alabama, by an act passed December 13, 1819, by the Legislature while in session at Huntsville. This was the first session of the Legislature of Alabama as a State. The name of Fairfield was first proposed for this county, but was changed on the passage of the bill to Butler, in honor of Captain William Butler. Fort Bibb
Fort Bibb was a stockade fort built in present-day Butler County, Alabama during the First Seminole War. History After the Ogly Massacre, many of the settlers in the surrounding area began to build protective stockades around their homes. Fort Bibb was first constructed in early 1818 and was built around the home of Captain James Saffold. The fort was named for William Wyatt Bibb, who was the acting governor of the Alabama Territory. Captain Saffold participated in the Battle of Calebee Creek, and afterwards settled in the area of Pine Flat. Warren A. Thompson and William Butler also settled in Pine Flat. Colonel Samuel Dale helped to fortify Fort Bibb while he and his militia constructed Fort Dale on the Federal Road in the spring of 1818. Fort Dale was built in response to the murders of Butler, William Gardender and Daniel Shaw. William Butler (militiaman)
William Butler (175920 March 1818) was an American militiaman who fought in the Creek War. Born in Louisa County, Virginia, he moved to Hancock County, Georgia, where he married Charity Garrett in 1796 and served in the state legislature. He then moved west to the Alabama Territory. He served as a militia leader during the Creek War of 1813–1814. Butler was killed near what is now Butler Springs, Alabama, on March 20, 1818, when he and four others travelling from Fort Bibb to Fort Dale were attacked by Creek Indians led by Savannah Jack. Butler managed to kill one of the attackers, but was overpowered by their numbers. His body and those others killed were found horribly mutilated the next day and were buried in the woods. Fort Dale
Fort Dale was a stockade fort built in present-day Butler County, Alabama by Alabama Territory settlers. The fort was constructed in response to Creek Indian attacks on settlers in the surrounding area. Background After the Creek War, a number of hostile Creeks (known as Red Sticks) remained in the area surrounding present-day Butler County. The Red Sticks were indignant over the large number of settlers who began traveling down the Federal Road and soon began attacking them. Settlers in the area began building protective stockades such as the one built by Thomas Gary near present-day Greenville. Gary had built a blockhouse and charged residents a fee to stay in it. On March 13, 1818, members of the Ogly and Stroud families were killed by Red Stick warriors under the command of Uchee Tom in what became known as the Ogly-Stroud Massacre.
