Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is a government-owned power generator which operates in the Damodar River area of West Bengal and Jharkhand states of India. The statutory corporation operates both thermal power stations and hydel power stations under the ownership of Ministry of Power, Government of India. DVC is headquartered in the Kolkata city of West Bengal, India. History The valley of the Damodar River was flood prone and the devastating flood of 1943, lead to the formation of the high-powered "Damodar Flood Enquiry Committee" by the government of Bengal. The committee recommended the formation of a body similar to the Tennessee Valley Authority of the United States. Subsequently, W.L. Durgapur Thermal Power Station
Durgapur Thermal Power Station is located near Waria Railway Station, 6 km from Durgapur railway station in West Bengal. The power plant is one of the coal based power plants of DVC. Power plant DTPS was set up in the sixties of last century with two 75 MW units and one 140 MW unit in the first stage. Another 210 MW unit was added to the plant in the early eighties to augment supplies to the growing industrial demand. The first 2 units of the Station had to be de-commissioned after a fire accident in 1985. Installed capacity U#3 has ABL make boilers and GE make turbine-generators, while U#4 has boiler, turbine and generator are of BHEL make. Damodar River (Pron: /ˈdʌmoˌdaː/) is a river flowing across the Indian states of Jharkhand and West Bengal. Rich in mineral resources, the valley is home to large-scale mining and industrial activity. Paschim Bardhaman district is a predominantly urban mining-industrial district in West Bengal. The headquarter of the district is Asansol. It was formed on 7 April 2017 after bifurcation of the erstwhile Bardhaman district as the 23rd district of West Bengal. Etymology Some historians link the name of the district to the 24th and last Jain ''tirthankara'', Mahavira Vardhamana, who came to preach in the area.
