Wareham, Dorset
Wareham ( ) is a historic market town and, under the name Wareham Town, a civil parish, in the English county of Dorset. The town is situated on the River Frome eight miles (13 km) southwest of Poole. Situation and geography The town is built on a strategic dry point between the River Frome and the River Piddle at the head of the Wareham Channel of Poole Harbour. The Frome Valley runs through an area of unresistant sand, clay and gravel rocks, and much of its valley has wide flood plains and marsh land. At its estuary the river has formed the wide shallow ria of Poole Harbour. Wareham is built on a low dry island between the marshy river plains. The town is situated on the A351 Lytchett Minster-Swanage road, linking Wareham with the A35 and A31 roads and the M27 motorway. Wareham is also the eastern terminus of the A352 road to Dorchester and Sherborne, both roads now bypassing the town centre. History Wareham was first settled in 1678 by Europeans as part of the towns of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Plymouth and Rochester, Massachusetts, Rochester. It was officially incorporated in 1739 and named after the town of Wareham, Dorset, Wareham in England. Because of its geography, Wareham's early industry revolved around shipbuilding and the related industries. Wareham is an abandoned townsite in Pine County, Minnesota, United States. Wareham was located immediately south of Sandstone on Government Road. Government Road, also known as "Douglas Highway" or the "Old Military Road", had served as a main route in the community. It is two miles from Interstate 35. Andrew Wareham (born 1965) is a British historian who has written numerous books and articles on Anglo-Saxon history, Anglo-Norman history and the hearth tax. He is employed as a reader in the department of humanities at Roehampton University, London. Education and career He was educated at Birmingham University (BA, PhD, PGCE) and King's College London (MA). His doctoral dissertation, supervised by Nicholas Brooks and completed in 1992, investigated the late Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman aristocracy in East Anglia. Dean Wareham (born 1 August 1963) is an American musician and actor who formed the band Galaxie 500 in 1987. He left Galaxie 500 in April 1991 and founded the band Luna. Since Luna's breakup in 2005, Wareham has released albums with fellow Luna bandmate (and wife) Britta Phillips (see Dean and Britta). Jack Wareham
John Wareham (10 April 1901 – 26 August 1984) was an English footballer who played on the left wing. Career Wareham played for non-League sides Scot Hay, Alsagers Bank P.S.A., and Podmore Hall, before joining Stoke in 1923. He did not play a first team game for the "Potters", and instead moved on to local rivals Port Vale in August 1924. After making his debut in a 4–1 defeat to Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on 22 April 1925, he played in the 4–0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford three days later. These were his only Second Division appearances for the "Valiants", and he was released at the end of the season, at which point he signed with Crewe Alexandra of the Third Division North. She graduated with a BA from Columbia College, Columbia University in 1987. She has an MA from the Institute of Modern Letters in Wellington, New Zealand. Career At age 15, Leonard began writing as a reporter; at 20, she was an intern reporter in TIME's New York Bureau. She then worked as a magazine writer and book reviewer.
