War (2002 Film)
''War'' (russian: Война, translit. ''Voina'') is a 2002 Russian war film by Aleksei Balabanov about the realities of the Second Chechen War, starring Aleksei Chadov and Ian Kelly. Plot The film begins with the protagonist, former conscript Ivan Yermakov ( Alexei Chadov), being interviewed by a journalist in a detention center. As he begins recounting his story, the film cuts to Chechnya in the summer of 2001, during the Second Chechen War. Held captive by Chechen warlord Aslan Gugayev ( Georgy Gurguliya), Ivan and another conscript, Fedya, serve as domestic slaves, while Aslan also uses Ivan as a communications specialist. Eventually, Aslan's militants also capture English actor John Boyle ( Ian Kelly) and his fiancée Margaret Michaelsen (Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė). Aleksei Balabanov
Aleksei Oktyabrinovich Balabanov (russian: Алeксeй Oктябpинoвич Балабанoв; 25 February 1959 – 18 May 2013) was a Russian film director, screenwriter, and producer, a member of European Film Academy. He started from creating mostly arthouse pictures and music videos but gained significant mainstream popularity in action crime drama movies ''Brother'' (1997) and ''Brother 2'' (2000), both of which starred Sergei Bodrov, Jr. Later, Balabanov directed the films '' Cargo 200'' (2007), ''Morphine'' (2008) and '' A Stoker'' (2010) which also received critical recognition. Viktor Germanovich Kazantsev ( rus, Ви́ктор Ге́рманович Каза́нцев, p=ˈvʲiktər ˈɡʲɛrmənəvʲɪtɕ kɐˈzantsɨf; 26 February 1946 – 14 September 2021) was an envoy of the Russian president to the Southern Federal District from 2000 to 2004. The 1998 abduction of foreign engineers took place when four United Kingdom-based specialists were seized by unidentified Chechen gunmen in Grozny, the capital of the unrecognized secessionist Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (ChRI).
