Samuel Wanjiru
Samuel Kamau Wanjiru (10 November 1986 – 15 May 2011) was a Kenyan long-distance runner who won the 2008 Beijing Olympics Marathon in an Olympic record time of 2:06:32; becoming the first Kenyan to win the Olympic gold in the marathon. He became the youngest gold medallist in the marathon since 1932. He set the current (as of 2020) 10,000m World Junior Record in 2005 and set the half marathon world record 3 times. In 2009, he won both the London Marathon and Chicago Marathon, running the fastest marathons ever recorded in the United Kingdom and United States, respectively. He retained his Chicago title in 2010 in a season fraught with injury. In 2011, he died after a fall from a balcony at his home in Nyahururu following a domestic dispute. Daniel Kinyua Wanjiru (born 26 May 1992) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. He won both the 2016 Amsterdam Marathon and the 2017 London Marathon. His personal best time for the marathon is 2:05:21, set in Amsterdam in 2016. Ruth Wanjiru Kuria (born 11 September 1981) is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who competes in marathon and half marathon races. She has a personal best of 2:27:38 hours for the longer distance (set in 2009) and was the 2013 winner of the Eindhoven Marathon. Wanjiru spent her early career in Japan, running for Hitachi, then Second Wind AC and regularly competed on the road circuit there. She represented her country at the 2009 Yokohama International Women's Ekiden. Esther Wanjiru Maina (born March 27, 1977) is a retired female long-distance runner from Kenya. She is from Kahuhia, Murang'a District. On January 15, 1999 she finished second at a half marathon race in Tokyo. Grace Wanjiru Njue (born 1979) is a female race walker from Kenya. She is a three-time African Champion and a Commonwealth Games medallist. Wanjiru set a 20 Kilometres race walk African Record when she won the event at the 2010 African Championships clocking 1:34:19 hours. The Kikuyu (also ''Agĩkũyũ/Gĩkũyũ'') are a Bantu ethnic group native to Central Kenya. At a population of 8,148,668 as of 2019, they account for 17.13% of the total population of Kenya, making them Kenya's largest ethnic group. The term ''Kikuyu'' is derived from the Swahili form of the word Gĩkũyũ. is derived from the word mũkũyũ which means sycamore fig (''mũkũyũ'') tree". Helen Wanjiru Gichohi is a Kenyan ecologist who was President of the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) from 2007 to 2013. Education Helen Gichohi was born into an agricultural community in central Kenya. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Kenyatta University and a Master of Science degree in biology of Conservation from University of Nairobi. She went on to the University of Leicester, where she gained a PhD degree in ecology. While working for her PhD, Helen studied the effect of controlled burning on wildlife grazing areas in the Nairobi National Park. Her conclusion was that, properly managed, fire could be helpful in maintaining an open savannah that provides food for wildlife. Esther Wanjiru Mwikamba was a Kenyan woman who died on March 20, 2012 following a coma state since February 18, 2012 when she was brutally assaulted for questioning the molestation of her friend, while she with her friends were leaving a night club in Dubai. Veronica Nyaruai Wanjiru (born October 29, 1989 in Nyahururu) is a Kenyan runner who specialises in 1500 metres. She now lives in Kaptagat, where she attends PACE training camp. She took part at the 2007 world Championships, but was 12th overall and missed the 1500 m final.
