Edith Sitwell
Dame Edith Louisa Sitwell (7 September 1887 – 9 December 1964) was a British poet and critic and the eldest of the three literary Sitwells. She reacted badly to her eccentric, unloving parents and lived much of her life with her governess. She never married but became passionately attached to Russian painter Pavel Tchelitchew, and her home was always open to London's poetic circle, to whom she was generous and helpful. Sitwell published poetry continuously from 1913, some of it abstract and set to music. With her dramatic style and exotic costumes, she was sometimes labelled a poseur, but her work was praised for its solid technique and painstaking craftsmanship. She was a recipient of the Benson Medal of the Royal Society of Literature. Sir Francis Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell, 5th Baronet CH CBE (6 December 1892 – 4 May 1969) was an English writer. His elder sister was Edith Sitwell and his younger brother was Sacheverell Sitwell. Like them, he devoted his life to art and literature. Early life Sitwell was born on 6 December 1892 at 3 Arlington Street, St James's, London. His parents were Sir George Reresby Sitwell, fourth baronet, genealogist and antiquarian, and Lady Ida Emily Augusta (''née'' Denison). He grew up in the family seat at Renishaw Hall, Derbyshire, and at family mansions in the region of Scarborough, and went to Ludgrove School, then Eton College from 1906 to 1909. Sitwell Baronets
The Sitwell Baronetcy, of Renishaw in the County of Derby, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 3 October 1808 for Sitwell Sitwell, Member of Parliament for West Looe. The Sitwell family had been ironmasters and landowners in Eckington, Derbyshire, for many centuries. In 1625, George Sitwell (1600–1667), High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1653, built Renishaw Hall, which remains the family seat. The family were to inherit the estates of two other families; Sacheverell, which died out in 1726, and Reresby, whose heiress married George Sitwell's grandson. George Sitwell's great-great-grandson Francis Hurt Sitwell (1728–1793), father of the first baronet, inherited Barmoor Castle, Northumberland. The Sitwells (Edith Sitwell, Osbert Sitwell, Sacheverell Sitwell), from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, were three siblings who formed an identifiable literary and artistic clique around themselves in London in the period roughly 1916 to 1930. This was marked by some well-publicised events, notably Edith's ''Façade'' with music by William Walton, with its public debut in 1923. All three Sitwells wrote; for a while their circle was considered by some to rival Bloomsbury, though others dismissed them as attention-seekers rather than serious artists. Sir George Reresby Sitwell, 4th Baronet (27 January 1860 – 9 July 1943) was a British antiquarian writer and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1885 and 1895. Biography Sitwell was born in London, the son of Sir Sitwell Reresby Sitwell, 3rd Baronet and his wife Louisa Lucy Hutchinson, daughter of the Hon. Henry Hely Hutchinson. His father died in 1862 and he succeeded to the baronetcy at the age of two. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He was a lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Yeoman Cavalry. Sitwell contested Scarborough seven times, losing twice in 1884. He was elected Member of Parliament for the constituency at the 1885 general election, but lost it at the 1886 general election. After regaining the seat in the 1892 general election, he lost it again in the 1895 general election. Sir Sitwell Sitwell, 1st Baronet (September 1769 – 14 July 1811) was a British politician and landowner. Sitwell was the son of Francis Hurt (1728–1793) of Mount Pleasant, Sheffield, Mount Pleasant, Sheffield, who changed his name to Sitwell in 1777, when he inherited the Renishaw Hall, Derbyshire estates of his mother's cousin, and who in 1793 inherited Barmoor Castle from a Phipps relative. Sitwell came to his father's estates in 1793 and greatly extended and improved Renishaw Hall between 1800 and 1803. He was Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), member of parliament for West Looe (UK Parliament constituency), West Looe from 1796 to 1802. In 1808 he was created a baronet, of Renishaw in the County of Derby. Sitwell married twice, firstly to Alice Parke, daughter of Thomas Parke (merchant), Thomas Parke in 1791 and secondly to Sarah Stovin in 1798.
