Walter W. Hess
Walter Wood Hess Jr. (March 17, 1892 – April 10, 1972) was a United States Army officer with the rank of Brigadier General. He is most famous for his leadership as the Artillery Commander of the 36th Infantry Division. Early life Walter Wood Hess Jr. was born in March 1892 in Pennsylvania. He attended the United States Military Academy (USMA)at West Point, New York, in 1911, and graduated 95th as part of the class the stars fell on in June 1915. There were ultimately 59 generals in that graduating class, including: Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, James Van Fleet, Henry Aurand, Joseph T. McNarney, A. Major General Vernon Edwin "Prich" Prichard (January 25, 1892 − July 10, 1949) was an American football quarterback and United States Army officer. He played college football with Army and was selected as a first-team All-American in 1914. He became a career officer in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of major general. He was lifelong friends with West Point classmate Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower. Lieutenant General Henry Spiese Aurand (April 21, 1894June 18, 1980) was a United States Army career officer. He was a veteran of World War I, World War II and the Korean War. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, Aurand was ranked 20th in the class of 1915, known as "the class the stars fell on" because no fewer than 59 of the 164 members of the class who graduated became generals. His classmates included Dwight D. Eisenhower and Omar Bradley, both of whom later achieved five-star rank. He was commissioned in the Coast Artillery Corps, but later transferred to the Ordnance Department. Van Fleet was a native of New Jersey, who was raised in Florida and graduated from the United States Military Academy.
