Walsh Island
Walsh Island or Walshisland () is a village in County Offaly, Ireland. It takes its name from the surrounding hinterland which is a fertile area of land on a hill (104m) located in an area of bogland known as the Bog of Allen, (hence, "island"). The village is one kilometre west of the R400 regional road which runs through the bog below. Walsh Island is 12 km from the nearest town, Portarlington. As of the 2016 census, the village had a population of 443 people. Sports Walsh Island GAA club has produced two All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winning captains in Willie Bryan and Richie Connor. Walsh Island's Matt Connor was also selected in 1999 as a member of the GAA Millennium Football team. He was also the subject of a ''Laochra Gael'' television programme on TG4. All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) ( ga, Craobh Shinsir Peile na hÉireann) is the premier competition in Gaelic football. An annual tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), it is contested by the county teams in All-Ireland. The first tournament was held in 1887; it has been held every year since 1889. Each tournament ends with a final, played by the 35th Sunday of the year at Croke Park in Dublin, with the winning team receiving the Sam Maguire Cup. Forge
A forge is a type of hearth used for heating metals, or the workplace (smithy) where such a hearth is located. The forge is used by the smith to heat a piece of metal to a temperature at which it becomes easier to shape by forging, or to the point at which work hardening no longer occurs. The metal (known as the "workpiece") is transported to and from the forge using tongs, which are also used to hold the workpiece on the smithy's anvil while the smith works it with a hammer. Matt Connor (born 1960 in Walsh Island, County Offaly) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for his local club Walsh Island and at senior level for the Offaly county team from 1978 until 1984, when he was seriously injured in a car crash. Connor's display for Offaly in the 1980 All-Ireland Semi-Final against Kerry, scoring 2–09, was his signature performance and is considered one of the best personal performances in the history of Gaelic football. Richie Connor
Richie Connor (born 1954 in Walsh Island, County Offaly) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for his local club Walsh Island and, from 1975 until 1989, at senior level for the Offaly county team. Walsh later served as manager of the Laois and Offaly senior football teams. As a player Connor was captain of the Offaly team which won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship title in 1982, denying Kerry a 'five in a row' title. He played at centre forward that day, having appeared as centre back in earlier years. Richie's only All-Star award came in 1981. Richie's first success was with the Erins Hope team that won the Dublin under-21 title in 1974. He helped them retain the title in 1975 and also won an Offaly under-21 medal with Walsh Island in the same year. Walsh Island is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the village of Walsh Island in County Offaly, Ireland. With 12 Senior Football wins and 2 Leinster Championship wins, they are one of the most successful clubs in the Offaly. History Before the club was formed in 1930, many players from Walsh Island played for nearby ''Geashill GAA''. It was decided that the club's colours would be the green and white hoops of Shamrock Rovers, the top football club in Ireland.
