Wallowa, Oregon
Wallowa () is a city in Wallowa County, Oregon, United States. The population was 808 at the 2010 census. History The Wallowa Valley is within the traditional lands of the Nez Perce. In the late 19th century, the Wallowa band was one of more than a dozen groups who lived across the inland Northwest as members of the Nez Perce tribe. The U.S. government sent the army to force them out after they refused to sign a treaty that would have removed them from their land. Chief Joseph led tribal members more than 1,000 miles to western Montana. They repeatedly battled with the army as they fled. Wallowa was platted in 1889. ''Wallowa'' is a Nez Perce word describing a triangular structure of stakes that in turn supported a network of sticks called ''lacallas'' to form a fish trap. Amos Marsh
Amos Marsh, Jr. (May 7, 1939 – November 2, 1992) was a professional American football running back in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions. He played college football at Oregon State University. Early years Marsh was the starting running back at Wallowa High School, contributing to the team's Tu-Valley football co-championship in 1957. Which was a three-way tie with Enterprise and Union, but only Wallowa advanced to the state playoffs after a vote by the league's school superintendents. As a sprinter and long jumper in track, Marsh helped Wallowa win the 1957 State Class "B" title. During those years, he developed a famous rivalry with Jim Puckett from Cove High School. The two raced in the 100 yard dash competition, with Puckett winning every contest, making Marsh the 100-yard dash state runner up three times (1956–1958). San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Chargers were a professional American football team that played in San Diego from 1961 until the end of the 2016 season, before relocating to Los Angeles, where the franchise had played its inaugural 1960 season. Frank Wayne Marsh (born June 19, 1940 in La Grande, Oregon), is a former professional American football defensive back in the American Football League for the San Diego Chargers. He competed in track at Oregon State University. Early years Marsh attended Wallowa High School, where he practiced track and football. He played as a halfback in football. He accepted a track scholarship from Oregon State, where he ran in the sprint medley relay and the high hurdles. Professional career Dallas Cowboys On June 27, 1963, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys to be tried at offensive end, although he didn't play college football. The ''Wallowa County Chieftain'' is a weekly newspaper in Enterprise, Wallowa County in the U.S. state of Oregon. History Founded in Joseph in 1884 by S. A. Wallowa County () is the northeastern most county in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,391, making it Oregon's fifth-least populous county. Its county seat is Enterprise. According to '' Oregon Geographic Names'', the origins of the county's name are uncertain, with the most likely explanation being it is derived from the Nez Perce term for a structure of stakes (a weir) used in fishing. An alternative explanation is that ''Wallowa'' is derived from a Nez Perce word for "winding water". The journals of Lewis and Clark Expedition record the name of the Wallowa River as ''Wil-le-wah''.
