Walker Sons And Company
Walker Sons and Company is an engineering firm established in Kandy in 1854 by a Scottish engineer, John Walker, as ''John Walker and Co''. It is the seventh oldest operating company in Sri Lanka. John Walker was born 24 August 1819 in Doune, Scotland the seventh child of James Walker, a cobbler, and Christina née Strang. He attended school in Deanston and was apprenticed in the engineering shop of Deanston cotton mill, operated by James Finlay and Company. In 1842 he travelled to Ceylon to work as an engineer for Wilson, Ritchie and Co. Over the next 12 years Walker worked as an engineer for a number of firms in Ceylon before returning to Scotland in 1854. In Scotland Walker met up with William Turner, an engineer whom he had known in Ceylon, who encouraged him to return to Ceylon to work with his engineering business in Kandy. The Austin Motor Company Limited was an English manufacturer of motor vehicles, founded in 1905 by Herbert Austin in Longbridge. Ceylinco Consolidated was one of Sri Lanka's oldest and largest business conglomerates until 2008. History The original company, ''Ceylon Insurance Company'', was founded by Justin Kotelawala, Cyril Rodrigo, Hugh Weerasekere and Cyril E. S. Perera ( UNP member for Colombo North). Colombo Racecourse ( si, කොළඹ තුරඟ තරඟ පිටිය) is a historical harness racing course in the Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. During the Second World War, it was used as a temporary airfield. In 2012, it was redeveloped as the Colombo Racecourse Sports Complex to become the first International Rugby Union ground in Sri Lanka to host all the national rugby union side's home matches. ''The Times of Ceylon'' was an English language daily newspaper in Sri Lanka published by Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL). It was founded in 1846 as the ''Ceylon Times'' and was published from Colombo. It ceased publication in 1985. History The ''Ceylon Times'' started on 11 July 1846 using the printing press of the defunct '' The Ceylon Herald''. The newspaper was established to oppose ''The Observer'' and promote the mercantile interests of British colonials. Initially it was published on Tuesdays and Fridays. In 1858 the paper's owners Wilson, Ritchie & Co. sold it to John Capper, a former sub-editor of '' The Globe''. Capper sold the paper to Alexander Allardyce in 1874 and returned to Britain. Old Parliament Building, Colombo
The Old Parliament Building, is the building that houses the Presidential Secretariat of Sri Lanka. Situated in the Colombo fort area facing the sea, it is in close proximity to the President's House, Colombo and adjacent to the General Treasury Building. The building housed the island's legislature for 53 years until the new parliamentary complex was opened at Sri Jayawardenepura in 1983. Building The Neo-Baroque-style building was built during the British colonial era to house the Legislative Council of Ceylon, and was an idea of Sir Henry McCallum. The Galle Face Hotel, founded in 1864, is one of the oldest hotels east of Suez. It is located on Galle Road, Colombo. The Ceylon Hotels Corporation is now part of the Galle Face Hotel Group.
