''Waldmeister'' (''Woodruff'') is an operetta written by Johann Strauss II to a libretto by . It was first performed on 4 December 1895 at the Theater an der Wien. Although not as popular as some of Strauss' other operettas, such as ''Der Zigeunerbaron'' and ''Die Fledermaus'', it was given eighty-eight performances, and was much admired by Johannes Brahms, a friend of the composer. Johann Baptist Strauss II (25 October 1825 – 3 June 1899), also known as Johann Strauss Jr., the Younger or the Son (german: links=no, Sohn), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. Josef Ichhäuser(1852–1920), known by the stage name Josef Josephi (also spelled Joseffy), was a Polish-born singer (tenor-baritone) and actor. Life Ichhäuser was born on in Kraków. He was the son of a cloth merchant. He graduated from high school in 1871 and made his debut in 1873 in Vienna in a small role as a soldier in Friedrich Schiller’s '' Fiesco''. His apprenticeship led him to Nagykanizsa, Chemnitz and Wrocław. In 1878 he joined the Ringtheater in Vienna. In 1880 he played at the Carltheater, and in 1883 at the Theater an der Wien. The polka-mazurka is a dance, musically similar to the mazurka, but danced much like the polka. Many polka-mazurkas were composed by Johann Strauss II and his family. Johann Strauss I did not compose any of this type of music; the first polka-mazurka example written by the Strauss family was in the year 1854 by Johann Strauss II, entitled La Viennoise op. 144.The polka-mazurka was not credited to the Strauss family alone, as many Viennese composers in the 1850s era also wrote many examples. Alexander Girardi
Alexander Girardi (pronounced ) (5 December 1850 – 20 April 1918) was an Austrian actor and tenor singer in operettas. Career Girardi was born in Graz; his father was the locksmith Andreas Girardi who had migrated to Graz from Cortina d'Ampezzo. Following the early death of his father, Alexander Girardi was raised by his stepfather who put him into a locksmith apprenticeship. Against his stepfather's wishes, he joined the amateur theatre ''Die Tonhalle'', where his acting talent was discovered; this led to an engagement at the Vienna Strampfer-Theater. In 1874 Girardi moved to the Theater an der Wien, where he continued to work for 22 years. In 1896/97 he worked at the Carltheater and then two years at the Volkstheater in Vienna.
