Balaklava, South Australia
The town of Balaklava (population 2048, postcode 5461) is located in South Australia, 92 kilometres north of Adelaide in the Mid North region. It is on the south bank of the Wakefield River, east of Port Wakefield. History Since prehistoric times the Balaklava district has been near the boundaries of the Kaurna and Peramangk peoples. The first Europeans to traverse the district were John Hill and Thomas Burr on 29 April 1840. They discovered Diamond Lake and encamped near Owen. The first European settlers in the area were James and Mary Dunn who in 1850 opened a hotel to service bullock teamsters carting copper ore upon the Gulf Road between the Burra mine and the export port of Port Wakefield. The Gulf Road copper ore traffic came to a sudden end in 1857 when a railway connected Gawler to Port Adelaide which provided a more economic path for exporting the ore. Goyder (; postcode: 5461) is a locality in South Australia's Mid North situated in the central east of the cadastral Hundred of Goyder. It was named for the hundred (proclaimed 1862) which was in turn named for George Goyder, Surveyor General of South Australia at the time. The locality is bounded on the west by the Adelaide-Port Augusta railway line. The Black Range stretches north–south through the locality from the foot of Mount Templeton outside the northern boundary of the locality. Similarly, the Bismark Valley (thought to be named in jest by early settler families of German origin for Otto von Bismarck) runs north to south through the centre of the locality. Everard Central (; postcode: 5461) is a locality in South Australia's Mid North. The locality is situated in approximately the southern two thirds of the cadastral Hundred of Everard. Hundred of Everard The Hundred of Everard is the cadastral unit of hundred on the northern Adelaide Plains containing the Everard Central locality. It is one of the 16 hundreds of the County of Stanley. It was named in 1867 by Governor Dominick Daly after William Everard (1819–1889), a South Australian parliamentarian. The southern third of the locality of Condowie is also situated inside the bounds of the Hundred of Everard. Local government In 1888 the Hundred of Everard was annexed to the District Council of Blyth as part of the District Councils Act 1887. Dalkey, South Australia
Dalkey is a locality in the Mid North of South Australia. It was established as a private subdivision of section 171 in the Hundred of Dalkey on the main road from Adelaide to Balaklava. It is named for the Hundred of Dalkey which in turn was named after Dalkey in Ireland. The boundaries of the locality were defined in 2000 for the long-established name. History The Dalkey area was initially used for pasture, but soon settlers found it good for growing wheat, which was carted by horse or bullock wagons to Port Wakefield for further shipment. Dalkey post office opened in 1866 and closed in 1910. When German farmers settled in the area in the 1860s, their settlement was known as Sichem. A Lutheran school was built in 1868, also used as a place of worship until a separate church building was constructed between 1872 and 1875. Burnsfield, South Australia
Burnsfield is a locality in South Australia's Mid North. It is north of Snowtown on the eastern side of the Augusta Highway. The locality is named for the Burnsfield railway station which was near the southwestern corner of the locality. The station was named for the Burns family, owners of the land at the time of and prior to the Salisbury-Redhill railway construction in 1925. The Burns family first took up land at the site at the western foot of the Hummocks Range in about 1878. In 2011, an eight-year mining lease was granted to mine salt from a site in the north west of Burnsfield. Bumbunga, South Australia
Bumbunga is a locality in the Mid North of South Australia north of Adelaide. It lies east of Lake Bumbunga. According to anthropologist Norman Tindale the name was derives from ''parnpangka'', the local indigenous (Kaurna) term for 'rain water lake', referring to Lake Bumbunga. The town administration falls under the control of the Wakefield Regional Council for local governance. Bumbunga lies in the state electoral district of Narungga and in the federal electoral division of Grey. The South Australian Government's ''Atlas of South Australia'' describes the Bumbunga environmental subregion as being a low-lying (mean altitude alluvial plains "with salt lakes and occasional dunes." The atlas further describes the subregion as having "grassland cover used for rotation cereal cultivation and livestock grazing" and "low shrubland used for livestock grazing" on salt lake margins. Bowmans (; postcode: 5550) is a locality in South Australia's Mid North. At the 2006 census, Bowmans had a population of 203. It is named after R and C Bowman who were "pastoralists in area." Traditional occupants According to the ''Manning Index of South Australian History'' the " Nantuwwara ictribe of some 25 to 30 once occupied the country from the River Wakefield, north to Whitwarta and west to Hummock Range", an area which would encompass the modern localities of Bowmans, Whitwarta, Goyder, Beaufort, Nantawarra and Mount Templeton. The term Nantuwara (or Nantuwaru) is considered to be a specific name for the northern hordes of the Kaurna people.
