Waimamaku is a village and rural community, based along the banks of the Waimamaku River south of the Hokianga Harbour on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is located in the Far North District and Northland Region on State Highway 12, south of Ōmāpere and north of Waipoua. It includes the area of Waiotemarama, west of the main Waimamaku village. The local marae, known as Te Whakamaharatanga Marae or Waimamaku Marae, is a meeting place of Te Roroa and the Ngāpuhi hapū of Ngāti Korokoro and Ngāti Te Pou. Te Roroa
Te Roroa is a Māori iwi from the region between the Kaipara Harbour and the Hokianga Harbour in Northland, New Zealand. They are part of the Ngāti Whātua confederation of tribes. In the early 19th century Te Roroa fought a series of wars with Ngāpuhi. In 1807 or 1808, following earlier battles, the Ngāpuhi chief Pokaia led a campaign against Te Roroa. Te Roroa, led by their chief Tāoho, and their Ngāti Whātua allies led by Murupaenga ambushed and defeated the Ngāpuhi forces in the Te Kai-a-te-karoro battle at Moremonui. Hokianga Harbour
The Hokianga is an area surrounding the Hokianga Harbour, also known as the Hokianga River, a long estuarine drowned valley on the west coast in the north of the North Island of New Zealand. The original name, still used by local Māori, is ''Te Kohanga o Te Tai Tokerau'' ("the nest of the northern people") or ''Te Puna o Te Ao Marama'' ("the wellspring of moonlight"). Ngāpuhi
Ngāpuhi (or Ngā Puhi) is a Māori iwi associated with the Northland region of New Zealand and centred in the Hokianga, the Bay of Islands, and Whangārei. According to the 2018 New Zealand census, the estimated population of Ngāpuhi is 165,201. This compares to 125,601 in 2001, 102,981 in 2006, and 122,214 in 2013. It is formed from 150 hapū/subtribes, with 55 marae. Despite such diversity, the people of Ngāpuhi maintain their shared history and self-identity. Waipoua
Waipoua Forest is a forest, on the west coast of the Northland Region of New Zealand's North Island. It preserves some of the best examples of kauri forest remaining in New Zealand. It is notable for having two of the largest living kauri trees, ''Tāne Mahuta'' and ''Te Matua Ngahere''. The forest was declared a sanctuary in 1952. A community-based volunteer organisation, the Waipoua Forest Trust, helps maintain the forest. The sanctuary is bordered to the south by the Professor W.R McGregor Reserve, named after W. R. McGregor (1894–1977). In the 1940s, McGregor successfully campaigned to end logging of the forest and to have it declared a sanctuary, a status it achieved in 1952. Today, the forest is a significant drawcard for visitors to Northland, with approximately 200,000 people visiting Tāne Mahuta every year. Waimamaku River
The Waimamaku River is a river of the Northland Region of New Zealand's North Island. It flows west from the Mataraua Forest to reach the Tasman Sea eight kilometres south of the mouth of the Hokianga Harbour. The Waimamaku River begins north of the Waipoua Forest and flows west through Waimamaku township, eventually reaching the west coast south of the Hokianga Harbour. Ōmāpere
Ōmāpere is a settlement on the south shore of Hokianga Harbour in Northland, New Zealand. State Highway 12 runs through Ōmāpere. Opononi is on the shore to the north of Ōmāpere. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "place of cutty grass" for . History European settlement The first European settler in the Ōmāpere area was John Martin, who arrived in the Hokianga Harbour in 1827.
