Waaia
Waaia ( ) is a town in northern Victoria, Australia in the Shire of Moira local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. The area is home to mainly irrigated dairy farms. At the , Waaia and the surrounding area had a population of 390 up from 376 in 2011. Waaia was established in the late 1880s to cater for the increasing rural population of the surrounding area following the opening of the railway line in October 1888, and a Post Office opened on 17 December that year. The rail line closed in 1986. The town consists of a school (established 1890), a hotel and an Australian rules football ground (the town has a team in the Picola & District Football League), along with around 10 houses. The Picola & District Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league affiliated with the AFL Victoria Country. The league covers a large area of northern Victoria, Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales from Shepparton, Victoria, Shepparton in the south to Jerilderie, New South Wales, Jerilderie in the north and consists of teams from the smaller communities and towns. Waaia Football Club
The Waaia Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football and netball club playing in the Picola & District Football League. The club is based in the small Victorian town of Waaia, approximately 220 km from Melbourne. History "Waaia Football Club" can be said to have originated in 1894. Over the next couple of decades the club competed in a number of different leagues and associations. In 1935, the club commenced an involvement in the Picola and District competition that continues to this day. Waaia's first premiership was won in 1953. Its 1990 premiership is folklore in the district with Mick Cleeland's 50 m torpedo goal giving the Bombers a come-from-behind victory after the final siren had sounded. Nathalia, Victoria
Nathalia ( ) is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located within the Shire of Moira local government area on the banks of Broken Creek and on the Murray Valley Highway. At the 2021 census, Nathalia had a population of 1,982. History Prior to European settlement, the area around Nathalia was occupied by the Yorta Yorta people. In 1838, Charles Sturt was the first European to explore the area, following the Murray River downstream. The squatter, W.J Locke established Kotupna station on the future site of Nathalia in 1843. The station was broken up for closer settlement in 1869. A selector, Richard Blake took up the townsite in 1875 and established a sawmill and flour mill soon after. Hotels, a post office (opened on 7 September 1878), schools and churches followed and Nathalia was officially gazetted as a village in 1880. Katunga, Victoria
Katunga is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, 228 kilometres from the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Katunga had a population of 996. Katunga Post Office opened on 10 June 1881. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1888, but today does not see regular passenger services. Katunga, similar to much of the surrounding area, is based on agriculture, including dairy production. Bizarrely, the town had two state primary schools with around 90 students at Katunga primary and 7 students at Katunga South primary just 2 km away. Numurkah, Victoria
Numurkah ( ) is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Goulburn Valley Highway, north of Shepparton, in the Shire of Moira. At the , Numurkah had a population of 4,768. History The area was occupied by the Yorta Yorta people prior to European settlement. Squatters moved into the area from NSW in the late 1830s. After the pastoral runs were made available for farm selection, the township of Numurkah was surveyed in 1875, the Post Office opening 2 November 1878. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1881, but has not seen any passenger services since 1993 when the train to Cobram was withdrawn. The station building remains in private ownership, and a footbridge crosses the line. Numurkah became the headquarters of the Murray Valley Soldier Settlement Area - one of the largest soldier settlements in Australia - after World War I. Moira Shire Council is a Local Government Area in the Northern Victoria Region of Victoria, Australia. Located in the north-east part of the state, it covers an area of . As at June 2021 the population was 30,018. It includes the towns of Cobram, Nathalia, Numurkah, Tungamah and Yarrawonga. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Cobram, Shire of Nathalia, Shire of Numurkah, and parts of the Shire of Tungamah and Shire of Yarrawonga.
