WWJL-LP was a low-power FM radio station licensed to Brookville, Pennsylvania, the county seat of Jefferson County. Formerly operating at 95.9, this station has been silent since May 2007. History Beginnings as WMKX The roots of WWJL can be traced back as early as April 1981, when Brookville's first radio station, WMKX, went on the air for the very first time at 95.9 FM. WMKX continued to operate on this frequency until the mid-1990s, when the owners of Punxsutawney-based competitor WPXZ decided to put a new FM station on the air in Brookville. To allow the 25,000 watt station to operate, channel shuffling among other FM stations in the area had to take place. This affected the operation of WMKX, which took the opportunity to acquire WPXZ's frequency of 105.5 and increase its power from 3,000 to 25,000 watts and cover a much larger area. WMKX is a classic/ modern rock music formatted radio station for northwestern Pennsylvania, broadcasting at 105.5 FM. The station, owned and operated by Seven Mountains Media, is licensed to Brookville, Pennsylvania, the seat of government for Jefferson County. WJNG, licensed to Johnsonburg, is a full co-owned simulcast outlet of WMKX. History A "Magic" Beginning First issued a construction permit on June 6, 1980; WMKX first went on the air at the frequency of 95.9 in 1981, and became the second FM station in Jefferson County, as WPXZ, 15 miles southeast in Punxsutawney had been the first eight years before. Sykesville is a borough in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,157 at the time of the 2010 census. Named for Jacob B. Sykes, an early resident, Sykesville was the birthplace of Olga Madar (1915–1996), the first woman to become a vice-president in the United Auto Workers (1970) and founder of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (1974). Owned by Seven Mountains Media, it broadcasts a contemporary hit radio format simulcast from sister station WPQP. History The roots of WQQP can be traced back to the early 1980s, when the 95.9 MHz channel was first assigned to Brookville, Pennsylvania; operating then as WMKX, a mostly automated station that played adult contemporary music. In the mid-90s, Renda Broadcasting Corporation, which owned competitors WECZ and WPXZ in Punxsutawney, applied to put a new 25,000 watt station on the air in Brookville at 103.3 MHz.
