WSTA
WSTA (1340 AM broadcasting, AM, "The People's Station") is a radio station licensed to serve Charlotte Amalie, United States Virgin Islands. The station is owned by Ottley Communications Corporation, and the station's broadcast license is held by OCC Acquisitions, Inc. WSTA was the first station to broadcast in the Virgin Islands. Airing a full-service variety format, the station has long been recognized for its community orientation and public service, remaining on the air through major hurricanes. WSTA is the Virgin Islands' Primary Entry Point station in the Emergency Alert System. History On September 7, 1949, the Federal Communications Commission authorized William N. Ron De Lugo
Ronald de Lugo (August 2, 1930 – July 14, 2020) was an American politician. He was the first Delegate (United States Congress), Delegate from the United States Virgin Islands to the United States House of Representatives. Ron de Lugo's parents were Puerto Ricans. Mr. De Lugo's grandfather owned a hardware store and gun dealership in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. Ron's parents were living in New Jersey at the time Ron was born and also lived in the Virgin Islands as civil servants. He was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and attended the Colegio San José, Río Piedras, PR, Colegio San José, Puerto Rico. He served in the United States Army as a program director and announcer for the Armed Forces Radio Service. Dianne Quander is an American songwriter, best known for writing the song "Caught Up In The Rapture," with her writing partner Garry Glenn which was recorded by Anita Baker. She also collaborated on songs of various artists including "Take You To Heaven" by Earth, Wind and Fire, "Why Not Me" by Phyllis Hyman, "Flame of Love" by Jean Carne and "Sweet Control" by Jon Lucien. Emergency Alert System
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) is a national warning system in the United States designed to allow authorized officials to broadcast emergency alerts and warning messages to the public via cable, satellite, or broadcast television, and both AM/ FM and satellite radio. The EAS became operational on January 1, 1997, after being approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in November 1994, replacing the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS). Its main improvement over the EBS, and perhaps its most distinctive feature, is its application of a digitally encoded audio signal known as Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME), which is responsible for the "screeching" or "chirping" sounds at the start and end of each message. WBNB-TV
WBNB-TV, VHF analog channel 10, was a CBS- affiliated television station licensed to Charlotte Amalie, on the island of Saint Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands. The station operated from 1961 until 1989. History WBNB-TV was the first television station to operate in the Virgin Islands. Its construction permit was secured in 1960 by a pair of New York City-area radio men, Robert Noble and Robert Moss, who shared equal ownership in Island Teleradio Service, Inc., the original licensee of WBNB-TV and sister station WBNB radio (1000 AM, now WVWI); their names ("Bob and Bob") served as the basis for the station's callsign. Hurricane Marilyn was the most powerful hurricane to strike the Virgin Islands since Hurricane Hugo of 1989, and the third such tropical cyclone in roughly a two-week time span to strike or impact the Leeward Islands, the others being Hurricane Iris and the much more powerful and destructive Hurricane Luis.
