WSRO
WSRO (650 AM HD Radio) is a radio station now broadcasting classical music. Licensed to Ashland, Massachusetts, it serves the MetroWest area. The station is owned by Alex Langer. WSRO also operates translator station W271CU (102.1 FM) in Framingham. Rooted in a station in Peterborough, New Hampshire, WSCV (later WMDK and WRPT), that operated from 1970 to 1991, the WRPT license was moved to Ashland in 1997. Initially relaunching as a talk station, the station later moved to religious programming, before spending much of the 2000s and 2010s as a Portuguese station for Framingham's Brazilian community. After the station ended its Brazilian programming and went silent in 2020 due to financial problems, it became a jazz station. WZBR (1410 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a jazz music format. Licensed to Dedham, Massachusetts, United States, the station serves the Greater Boston area. The station is owned by Langer Broadcasting Group, LLC, which also owns WSRO in the area. WZBR also operates translator station W251CR (98.1 FM) in Medford. History The station signed on July 17, 1961, as WOKW. The callsign changed to WAMK on September 28, 1981; to WATD on December 15, 1985; and to WMSX on April 1, 1990. On June 10, 2013, WMSX filed an application to move from Brockton to Dedham, with a transmitter in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston. WAZN (1470 AM) is an ethnic radio station in the Boston, Massachusetts market, licensed to Watertown. It is owned by Multicultural Broadcasting, and broadcasts Chinese language programming, simulcast from M.R.B.I.'s New York City station. History The station signed on in January 1958 as WSRO, operating out of Marlborough. At one time, WSRO was a music station. Additionally, at one time, the station was simulcast in Gardner on WGAW (1340). However, in 1996, the station filed for bankruptcy, and was sold separately from WGAW in October. WQOM (1060 AM) is a radio station broadcasting Catholic radio programming in the Boston market. The station is owned by Holy Family Communications and is licensed to Natick, Massachusetts. History The station first began operation November 12, 1972, as WGTR, owned by John Garabedian. It was a full service daytime station for Natick and MetroWest, programming top-40 music. WGTR originally from a small tower in a residential area of Natick. However, Garabedian had long hoped to expand WGTR into Boston itself. In 1980, he won a construction permit to move to a five-tower setup in Ashland, operating at 25,000 watts during the day. This gave it adequate coverage of most of the Boston area. HD Radio
HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation. This leaves the original analog signal intact, allowing enabled receivers to switch between digital and analog as required. In most FM implementations, from 96 to 128 kbps of capacity is available. Ashland is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the MetroWest region. The population was 18,832 at the 2020 United States Census. History The area now known as Ashland was settled in the early 18th century and inhabited prior to that by the Megunko Native Americans, to which Megunko Hill owes its name. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. Upton P. Bell (born 1937) is an American former National Football League (NFL) executive, talk show host, and sports commentator. He is the son of former NFL commissioner Bert Bell and Broadway theatre actress Frances Upton. Football executive Baltimore Colts Bell started his football career by working at the Baltimore Colts' training camp, moved to the ticket office, and in 1964 transitioned to the Colts' scouting department where he became personnel director in May 1966.
