The Welsh Rugby Union Division Five East (also called the SWALEC Division Five East for sponsorship reasons) is a rugby union league in Wales. Competition format and sponsorship Competition There are 11 clubs in the WRU Division Five East. During the course of a season (which lasts from September to May) each club plays the others twice, once at their home ground and once at that of their opponents for a total of 20 games for each club, with a total of 110 games in each season. Teams receive four points for a win and two point for a draw, an additional bonus point is awarded to either team if they score four tries or more in a single match. No points are awarded for a loss though the losing team can gain a bonus point for finishing the match within seven points of the winning team. Teams are ranked by total points, then the number of tries scored and then points difference. At the end of each season, the club with the most points is crowned as champion. Llanhilleth RFC
Llanhilleth Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team from the village of Llanhilleth in Blaenau Gwent, Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Dragons. Early history Although rugby was known to have been played in Llanhilleth before the 1890s it is generally accepted that the team that would become Llanhilleth RFC first played club rugby in 1894. This team was called the Grasshoppers and was formed by members of the local male voice choir. After the First World War the club played under the name 'The All Blacks' and achieved some local success including winning the Cyrus Davies Cup on two occasions. Like most Welsh clubs, Llanhilleth disbanded during the Second World War but reformed under its present name on April 4, 1946, and that season won the Cyrus Davies Cup for a third time. Abertillery RFC
Abertillery Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union club based in Abertillery. According to their website, they were founded in 1883 by a coal miner named Doug Wallace who was a local resident who moved from Scotland in 1882, Wallace was known for his commitment for the club until he died in 1899 and will be remembered as a special part of the club even to do this day. Talywain RFC
Talywain Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in Talywain near the town of Pontypool, Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Newport Gwent Dragons. In December 1947 a combined Pontypool, Talywain and Blaenavon side played against the Australian national team at Pontypool Park as part of a post-war rebuilding tour. The game ended 9–7 to the tourists. On 4 September 1973 Talywain played an invitational Monmouth team to celebrate the club's 75th anniversary and the opening of a new ground at Emlyn Park. Although Talywain RFC played out almost all matches for the 2007–08 season in Division Four East they withdrew from the league before the end of the season. Abercarn RFC
Abercarn Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in Abercarn near the city of Newport. They currently play in the Welsh Rugby Union Division 3 having been relegated in two consecutive seasons; from Division 3 East in 2007 and Division 4 East in 2008. Blaenavon Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in the town of Blaenavon, South Wales. Blaenavon RFC is one of the older members of the Welsh Rugby Union founded in 1877 in the Iron and coal town of Blaenavon and is a feeder club for the Newport Gwent Dragons. Blaenavon RFC first game was against local rivals Abergavenny on Thursday 8 November 1877 and ended in a draw. Trinant RFC
Trinant Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team from the village of Trinant in Newport, Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Newport Gwent Dragons. Rugby had been played in Trinant before 1956, but proof of the existence of Trinant RFC can not be substantiated before this date. The club was founded by Albert Clement, who had played rugby in the town in the 1940s, and Ray Morgan, who became secretary.
