Abercarn RFC
Abercarn Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in Abercarn near the city of Newport. They currently play in the Welsh Rugby Union Division 3 having been relegated in two consecutive seasons; from Division 3 East in 2007 and Division 4 East in 2008. The club then immediately gained promotion back to Division 4 East in 2009 and then gained promotion back to Div 3 in 2012, winning the Swalec Bowl in 2010 along the way. Abercarn RFC is a feeder club for the Newport Gwent Dragons. Club history Abercarn is a club with a long history having been founded over 100 years ago. In 1950 Abercarn RFC lost three members of their club including their club captain, Don Rowlands and coach, Ray Box in the Llandow air disaster. The event is remembered by the club in their team badge, with a plane propeller sitting in its centre. Abercarn
Abercarn is a small town and community in Caerphilly county borough, Wales. It is 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Newport on the A467 between Cwmcarn and Newbridge, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. History An estate at Abercarn was owned by the ironmaster Richard Crawshay; in 1808, it passed to his son-in-law, the industrialist and politician Benjamin Hall. The district was traditionally associated with the coal mining collieries, ironworks and tinplate works of the South Wales coalfield and South Wales Valleys, although all have now the town, which lies in the middle portion of the Ebbw valley, being situated on the south-eastern flank of the once great mining region of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. Newport RFC
Newport Rugby Football Club ( cy, Clwb Rygbi Casnewydd) is a Welsh rugby union club based in the city of Newport, South Wales. They presently play in the Welsh Premier Division. Until 2021 Newport RFC were based at Rodney Parade situated on the east bank of the River Usk. Every major rugby union touring team to visit Wales has played at Rodney Parade, and all of them were beaten at least once in the twentieth century by a side who, in 1951, played in the match at Cardiff RFC that attracted what was, a world-record crowd of 48,500 for a rugby union match between two clubs. Dai Rees (rugby Player)
David 'Dai' Rees (born 23 September 1964) is a Welsh former rugby union player. He attained four caps for the Wales B side, and was also a National Squad member in 1986. Rees played club rugby for Abercarn RFC, the South Glamorgan Institute, Swansea RFC, Newport RFC and Newbridge RFC. He later became player/coach at Cross Keys RFC and Head Coach after a knee injury forced his retirement. Rees was Assistant Coach to the Wales U21 side for the 2006–07 season was appointed Head Coach of the Wales Sevens team in October 2005. In May 2006, Rees was appointed as Head Coach to the newly created Wales U20 side, whilst continuing in his role as Wales Sevens Head Coach and assistant coach to the Newport Gwent Dragons. He was Head Coach with Newport RFC but gave up this role at the end of the 2005–2006 season to concentrate on his Dragons coaching duties. Dicky Ralph
Dicky Ralph (21 January 1908 – 5 October 1989) was a Welsh international rugby fly-half who played rugby union for Newport and rugby league with Leeds and Batley. He won six caps for Wales at rugby union, and also represented Wales at rugby league. International career Ralph was first capped for Wales against France on 28 February 1931 under the captaincy of Jack Bassett. The game was a walkover, with Wales winning 35-3, Ralph scored two tries of the seven scored by the Welsh team that day and unsurprisingly was reselected two weeks later to face Ireland. In a bruising encounter, Wales won at Ravenhill, with Ralph again on the score sheet, this time with a drop goal. Later that year he faced Bennie Osler's touring South African team twice, once with Newport, and then again in December as part of the Welsh team. Norman Harris (rugby)
Norman Harris (c. 1918 – 2007) was a Welsh rugby union, and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s. He played club level rugby union (RU) for Abercarn, Ebbw Vale, Pontypool and Newbridge, and representative level rugby league (RL) for Wales, and at club level for Oldham ( Heritage № 497), Leigh and Rochdale Hornets, as a , i.e. number 4 or 5. Bristol RFC
Bristol Bears (officially Bristol Rugby Club or Bristol Rugby) are a professional rugby union club based in Bristol, England. They play in Premiership Rugby, England's top division of rugby. The club was founded as Bristol Football Club in 1888; between 1921 and 2014, home matches were played at the Memorial Ground, since when they have been played at Ashton Gate Stadium in the south-west of the city. Pontypool RFC
Pontypool Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in the town of Pontypool, which plays in the WRU Championship (known as the SWALEC Championship for sponsorship purposes). Due to the regionalisation of Welsh rugby in 2003, Pontypool RFC is now a feeder club to the Dragons regional team. Pontypool play their home matches at Pontypool Park. Their traditional home kit is a red, white and black-hooped shirt and socks with white shorts, although they did gradually shift to wearing black shorts post-2003. Pontypool has a long history within Welsh rugby and is one of the country's most notable clubs, being present at the formation of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1881, but disbanding before the turn of the 19th century. Paul Turner (rugby Union)
Paul Turner (born 13 February 1960) is a former Wales international rugby union player and the former head coach of Welsh regional side Newport Gwent Dragons. Playing career Turner was born in Newbridge, and still holds the Newbridge points scoring record of 405 points from season 1983–84 and still remains the only back capped from Newbridge RFC. An outside-half, he was a prolific goal-kicker and is the joint record points holder for Newport RFC. He also played for Pontypool, Newbridge, Bedford and Sale FC. He represented Wales on 3 occasions and played for the Barbarians invitational side three times. Llandow Air Disaster
The Llandow air disaster was an aircraft accident in Wales in 1950. At that time it was the world's worst air disaster with a total of 80 fatalities. The aircraft, an Avro Tudor V, had been privately hired to fly rugby union enthusiasts to and from an international game in Ireland. On the return flight the aircraft stalled and crashed on its approach to land. Course of events On 12 March 1950, an Avro 689 Tudor V, ''Star Girl'', owned by Airflight Limited and being operated under the "Fairflight" name, took off from Dublin Airport in Ireland, on a private passenger flight to Llandow aerodrome in South Wales. The aircraft had 78 passengers and 5 crew on the manifest. The flight had been chartered privately for a trip to Belfast to watch the Welsh rugby union team compete against the Irish in the Five Nations Championship at the Ravenhill Stadium. Dragons RFC ( cy, Dreigiau) are one of the four professional rugby union regional teams in Wales. They are owned by the Welsh Rugby Union and play their home games at Rodney Parade, Newport and at other grounds around the region.
