WPAT-FM (93.1 FM) – branded "93.1 Amor" – is a radio station that programs a Spanish CHR radio format. Licensed to Paterson, New Jersey, the station is owned by the Spanish Broadcasting System and serves the New York metropolitan area. WPAT-FM (1949–1951)
WPAT-FM (originally WNNJ) was a short-lived Paterson, New Jersey, commercial radio station, which operated from 1949 until early 1951. The station ended operations after its transmitter tower was destroyed in a windstorm, and the owners concluded that it would be too expensive to repair the damage. History WNNJ was originally authorized as a Class B FM station on 103.5 MHz to Donald Flamm and James V. Cosman, who also owned AM station WPAT. In mid-1948 the ''Passaic Herald-News'' purchased a 90 percent interest in WPAT and the not-yet built WNNJ. This sale was approved by the Federal Communications Commission in December 1948. At this time the ''Herald-News'' already owned a Paterson FM station, WWDX on 107.1 MHz, and contemporary FCC regulations did not permit licensees to operate more than one FM station in a given community. WPAT (930 AM), is a radio station licensed to Paterson, New Jersey, with a brokered programming format. WPAT is owned by Multicultural Broadcasting, and its studios are located in New York City, in Manhattan's Financial District. The station's four transmitting towers are located in Clifton, New Jersey. History WPAT first went on the air in 1941, from studios at 7 Ellison Street in Paterson. In December 1949, it began broadcasting 24 hours a day with power increased to 5,000 watts using a directional antenna. Air personalities then included John Henry Faulk. For many years, the station (along with its FM counterpart) would broadcast a beautiful music format under the slogan "Easy 93". WSKQ-FM (97.9 MHz), known on-air as "La Mega 97.9", is a radio station licensed to New York City and is owned and operated by Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS). The station has a tropical format, which consists of such musical styles as salsa, merengue, bachata, and reggaeton. WSKQ-FM's transmitter is located at the Empire State Building. History On July 1, 1951, WEVD-FM began broadcasting on 107.5 MHz, simulcasting the programs of WEVD (1330 AM), owned by ''The Jewish Daily Forward''. Programming consisted of brokered ethnic programming, Jewish programming, and some pop standards and big band. Pursuant to a construction permit issued in May 1953, WEVD-FM moved to 97.9 MHz, and 107.5 went off the air. The transmitter was relocated to the Empire State Building in 1970. Norman B. KE2XCC, first authorized in 1945 with the call sign W2XEA, was an experimental FM radio station located in Alpine, New Jersey and operated by inventor Edwin Howard Armstrong. It was located at the same site as Armstrong's original FM station, W2XMN, which dated to the late 1930s and primarily transmitted on the original FM "low band" frequencies. W2XEA was established as a companion station operating on the new FM "high band", which had been recently designated by the Federal Communications Commission as the replacement for the original FM station assignments. W2XMN shut down in 1949 after the "low band" was eliminated, and at this time W2XEA changed its call sign to KE2XCC and took over most of the functions previously performed by W2XMN.
