WNTI (990 AM) is an American radio station, licensed to serve Somerset, Pennsylvania; the seat of news/talk for Somerset County. The station broadcasts with a maximum output power of 10,000 watts during the day and greatly reduces power to 100 watts at night, using a two-tower directional antenna system. The station is a simulcast of WNTJ in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. History: beginnings as WVSC The very first radio station in Somerset County, this station signed on as WVSC on January 15, 1951. Operating as Somerset Broadcasting Co., the owners were T. H. Oppegard, President & General Manager, and Carl R. Lee, Sales Manager and Chief Engineer. The call letters stood for an acronym of "We're the Voice of Somerset County". The station for many years programmed a full-service format of news, sports, and talk, much of it local. The station, established in 1946, is currently owned by Seven Mountains Media and is a simulcast of WNTI out of Somerset, Pennsylvania. It broadcasts a news/talk radio format including Pittsburgh Pirates baseball, Pittsburgh Penguins hockey, Pittsburgh Steelers football and select Fox News Radio programming. The station was assigned the WNTJ call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on May 8, 2008. Prior to 2008, this station was home to ESPN Radio affiliate WPRR, and before that, was the first home for WNTJ. The oldies formatted station currently carries a syndicated feed of Westwood One's "Good Time Oldies" format. The station is owned by Seven Mountains Media, LLC. History Beginnings as WCCS For many years, this station was known as WYSN, "Sunny 101". Licensed to Central City in Somerset County, the station first went on the air October 19, 1972 as WCCS, whose calls are used today by an AM station north of Somerset County in Homer City. The original owner of the station was Central Broadcasting Company, with Ben Jones serving as the company's president. WJHT (92.1 FM, "Hot 92.1") is a radio station licensed to serve Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The station is owned by Seven Mountains Media. It airs a Top 40 (CHR) music format. This station was assigned the WJHT call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on July 13, 2006. There is no relation with WWKL ("Hot 106.7") in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. However, the station is related to WWOT ("Hot 100.1") in Altoona, Pennsylvania, as they are also owned by Forever Media Inc. WFGI-FM (95.5 Hertz, MHz, "Froggy 95.5") is a Froggy (brand), Froggy branded country music formatted radio station in Pennsylvania serving the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Johnstown area. The station is owned and operated by Seven Mountains Media, LLC. History The station began at 96.5 (now WKYE) as WJNL-FM in 1973 as the sister station to WJNL. They played easy to listen to music and had news updates hourly. It was known as this until it was purchased in 1996 by Clear Channel Communications. Then it became "96.5 the Mountain" with the callsign WMTZ and began playing country music. In 2005, Clear Channel decided to leave the Johnstown market and sold its station properties to Altoona-based Forever Broadcasting. Forever wanted to expand its Froggyland into the Pittsburgh area and the 96.5 signal was not able to do so.
